I really, really liked Raleigh and Mako's relationship. Yes, Raleigh was cocky but he wasn't obnoxious. He was really sweet and awesome and kick-ass - just like Mako. And he respected and supported the hell out of her! He didn't see her just as a piece of ass and he demanded respect for her from others too. I loved their friendship and though it was pretty much headed towards the lovebirds category, there was an actually development there, they were friends and colleagues first. And that was awesome!
The Hanson family and Pentecost were interesting too but not as much as Raleigh and Mako. Who really got on my nerves were the scientists and Hannibal Chau, they were unnecessary comic relief that actually stalled the action, I could do without them. Very, very aggravating.
The best part were, of course, the mecha fights. That was excellent. I will have to get it on DVD ASAP and watch them again because I loved the choreography, the look of it!
I would give this movie 8/10. Loved Raleigh and Mako and the mecha fights, but could do without the secondary characters. I was happy with what I saw but considering Guillermo del Toro's fame, I expected something more, character wise. The action was excellent, though.
