Another movie that I watched yesterday. And I think I understand why it flopped in the cinemas - it's a good movie. And that's it, nothing more, nothing less. Just a GOOD movie. Pretty much average. Excellent, breathtaking special effects, that's true, but I didn't find the story all that compelling. I guess we should've connected with all three earthlings: Hal, Carol and Hector. But honestly? I didn't care one iota about weird Hector or his daddy issues or his "the prom queen doesn't like me" whining. Hal's recklessness and irresponsibility wasn't really endearing - and why was the birthday scene actually there? In the light of everything else, it was pretty much useless, just one scene with Hal's family, a family that never popped up again. I did like Carol though. She was awesome. And I LOL'd when she recognized him even with his mask on.
I loved, truly loved the special effects. I don't get people who hate and complain about CGI. It's a comic book movie that takes place - at least partially - on a different planet. Would fake looking cardboard rooms look better? I'm a CGI girl through and through. Since we know it was NOT filmed on another planet anyway, I prefer great looking CGI to plastic rocks a la the 60s Star Trek.
So, overall? A funny romp but nothing special. The only thing that really stuck out was Parallax, he was terrific and terrifying.
