Okay, I have to ask this:

When they translate things like, "You turned Fed? I was forced Fed!" ... the joke in Neal's line won't translate, because I'd assume that 'Fed = national cop" won't sound the same as 'fed = given food to eat'... so the joke is lost. Isn't it?

Do they rewrite the word puns or just translate them literally and make... I don't know... different jokes?

This is what I get for my only other fluent language being ASL... there are never ASL versions of t.v. shows.

Well, some translators/interpreters try to force it and use exactly the same words in Czech - and it sounds terrible.

When I translate books and come across such a pun, I usually use a different joke :)

So what will they do with that line (if they don't force it)? Do something like, "You became a cop?" "I had to become a cop!" and just let it be less funny but still get the point of the conversation across?

I think that's exactly what they'll do. Neal'll probably just say "They forced me." or something like that.
