I think that Jeff Eastin's answer was unambiguous this time:

TheTwoCents: The big question seems to be: is Kate really dead? I thought she was, but some people seem to think she’s not.
Jeff Eastin: [She’s] truly dead, or she exists in Neal’s memory and that’s enough to keep her alive. Link

Yes! Finally! I don't mind seeing more of her in flashbacks, to see her fleshed out in flashbacks, but I'm glad that they did kill her for real. My show didn't jump the shark!

I need to put together a list of all the articles/interviews from the Paley Fest. There's so much interesting info floating around! :)

You mean those fans who were insisting that those of us who thought she was really dead "didn't know how to watch television" were wrong?

Hopefully. And that phrase you used - I think I know who you are talking about. That girl, when I once pointed people towards something she posted in her LJ, yelled at me that she "didn't want people who don't know how to watch TV visiting her LJ." Yeah, in every fandom there are those who feel the need to police other people's opinions.

Yeah we're probably talking about the same person... just... yeah one of THOSE fans.

Anyway moving on - I think despite the cliche of her death being something that drives Neal's actions it makes more sense for her to really be dead because they hadn't done enough with her for anything else to make much sense.

However I do hope they don't use it as something to cause more tension between Peter and Neal - having Neal hate Peter for not believing Kate was in danger or something similar...

I don't think that'll happen, Neal hating Peter, Jeff Eastin knows pretty well what his fans want - Neal and Peter together against the world. I have to say that Jeff is one of the few writers/execs that I actually trust to handle the characters properly.

And I kind of loved that there was no tearful reunion between Neal and Kate, that they killed her without allowing him to even talk to her. That was quite original and even more profound. The flashbacks will be even more painful and touching that way.

Agreed - I'm just letting experiences with other shows interfere with the truth of White Collar and how awesome it is. :)

Did you see the interviews with the cast that Hollywood Reporter did after the Paley event and the one with Tim where he was asked if Neal will be loyal to Peter - and his answer was: "I hope so because I know Peter is loyal to Neal." I love the cast so much!

Yup, saw that! I loved that part. Tim loves his character so much. And the obvious affection he has for Matt bleeds over into that. Just, the way Peter smiles so fondly at Neal, it makes you want to go all "Aww..."

Agreed. And even when Peter is upset with Neal he can't help but be amused. Peter is just awesome that way. :)

I'm glad they're not going to mess with the audience and make her death be fake. That's getting to be too much of a cliche. It only works for me on SPN. ^_^

Ha! On SPN, nobody is ever really dead - even if they are dead!

BTW, how did you like the finale? I loved the ep, it was so fast paced - with gratuitous shirt-lessness ;P - and with so much emotion. I loved the last scene with Peter and Neal!

I liked the finale a lot. I'm looking forward to it starting up again. It was great to have the whole season to watch at once.

All I can say is, oh THANK GOD. I think I would have to give WC up if JE did that, because it means that he really has no respect for the intelligence of his audience.

I've said it before, Kate's survival is impossible from a practical standpoint. The last shot of her face through the window is 12 seconds before boom. She's not standing at the door, she's sitting in a window seat. There's no cargo or backdoor exit on those little jets.

Thank you for posting this.

I'm glad that Kate's really dead too. I was afraid that the show might jump the shark and let her live. I know that someone said that those little planes had doors on both sides, but I think that Peter would have seen her get out!

Who ever said those planes have doors on both sides have never flown on one of them, or flown in many commercial jets at all.

Most jets, even the big 777 I was on back in October have entry doors on just one side - starboard.

Oh, well...just good to know she's really, truly dead.

I hope you will gather the Paley Fest pieces together. I don't have mad Internet skillz to search for them. So would love it if you would. Thanks.
