Tsuzuki Asato, Yami no Matsuei

Oh, how much I loved him. He was the sweetest. And the woobie of the show, haunted by his own supernatural abilities and the screepy, scary Muraki. Usually so silly, in reality Tsuzuki was so incredibly sad and lonely. And then he met Hisoka who made it all better...

Rei Fukai, Yukikaze

Rei was quite a mysterious character, wasn't he? A pilot with whom his own plane was obsessed. Did he die in the other universe, fighting aliens, or didn't he? Considering the ending, what the reporter saw in her rearview mirror when she visited Jack, Rei's best friend... Was Rei a ghost? Did Jack know Rei was there? Was that the reason why he quit army and started living like a hermit? Or was what she saw just a trick of light? Great character in a great anime! I actually want to buy the novel that goes with it!

I've finally got around to watch the first episode of GONZO's Sentou Yousei Yukikaze OVA. Wow. The animation is wonderful and the story very interesting.

It's set in the near future where people fight against the aliens they call the JAMs. Human pilots fly super fighter machines and one of them is Yukikaze. Its pilot is Lt. Rei Fukai, a handsome young man that doesn't have much to say during the anime. Yukikaze, the board computer of this fighter, obviously adores him. You can say that Yukikaze is the only sentient AI out there. When these two are together, they can survive and defeat anything. You could say that it's a strange love relationship since Yukikaze refuses to work properly with any other pilot and Rei doesn't want to fly any other plane.

And then there is Major Jack Bukhar, Rei's superior. But Jack is more of a researcher than a fighter. Oh, he is no coward and he knows how to fly a fighter and kick ass, but he decided to concentrate on developing a fighter that could fly and fight without a human pilot. His intentions are not really altruistic though. He cares for Rei very VERY much and he doesn't want to see him risk his life. He wants to see Rei safe and sound and not fighting the aliens - a thing the two men very much disagree about.

The relationship between Rei and Jack is a strange one. They care very deeply about each other and there are hints there that it might not be just a friendship that binds them together. And from what I understand, this grows even more pronounced in the later parts - which makes me rather giddy, really XD

Actually, this yaoi-sh hints were the reason why I downloaded this anime. But now, it's just the cherry on top. The story is rather intriguing, even though not very original, and it's the details that catch one's interest (like the fact that they give instructions in English while flying which is very much the standard today). Now I have to see the second part :)
