Ah, the good old days of S1, when there was no shipping on-screen and everybody was having fun, exploring the new galaxy and kicking Wraith-butt! I watched it with my mom this time because I needed to show her the glory of McKay and Sheppard (then I put on Echoes :P).

This episode, this was true scifi! The perfect pilot with a lot of action and fun, with a story that made me want to see more. This is what I miss in the scifi shows these days when every writer/exec feels the need to be gritty and dark and do "art" *snorts* Please, give me explosions and space fights any day, that's why it's called SCIFI, after all. I don't need soap opera in space!

My favorite parts? Everything before they went to Teyla's planet - the whole beginning is one awesome, hilarious pile of happy goo! - and then Sheppard flooring McKay with his math knowledge! Yes, Rodney, there ARE military guys who aren't stupid, go figure!

That was what always bothered me about Jack O'Neill, the writers just made him too stupid/ignorant, whereas Sheppard's intelligence is Mensa-level high and he's not afraid to use it and play geeky with the other geeks. I think that that's one of the reasons why he's the perfect commander for a more or less civilian outpost like Atlantis - he does not bully the scientists, he geeks out together with them!

JACKSON: Jack!
O'NEILL: Daniel! Warm welcome.
JACKSON: Wasn't me.

SHEPPARD: What the hell was that thing anyway?
BECKETT: You mean the drone? The weapon the Ancients built to defend this outpost.
SHEPPARD: The who?
BECKETT: You do have security clearance to be here?
SHEPPARD: Yeah, yeah. General O'Neill just gave it to me.
BECKETT: Then you don't even know about the Stargate.
SHEPPARD: The what?

O'NEILL: I said don't touch anything.
SHEPPARD: I-I just sat down.

SUMNER: As long as you remember who's giving the orders.
SHEPPARD: That would be Doctor Weir, right?

McKAY: Even with the six symbols Lieutenant Ford provided there are still hundreds of permutations ...
SHEPPARD: Seven hundred and twenty.
McKAY: Yes. I knew that of course. I'm just surprised you did.

I love the show like crazy! \o/

I love the pilot. I've never considered myself a scifi fan, but it made me fall in love with the show.

I'm a huge fan of scifi - but the campy stuff that's now consider "out", not "in", scifi where people explore and have fun and enjoy what they do. Meaning: Star Trek Reboot? Yay! Stargate Universe? Nay! It's actually rather funny that in the same year when ST is celebrating its comeback with a light and action filled reboot, Stargate goes for dark.

I just love the pilot. Have you read the novelization? It's awesome! Sally Malcolm did an amazing job!

Smart!Sheppard is crazy awesome. I like to think it was love/irritate at first sight with him and McKay.

Yes! McKay's look when Sheppard told him that 6 symbols can have 720 variations! Ha! What a novelty, a military guy with a brain!
