Weak Start for Syfy’s Stargate Universe: Two-hour Series Premiere Draws 2.35M Viewers

Last night was the series premiere of Syfy’s Stargate Universe and although MGM’s (the studio who produces the show) PR team is in full spin mode, the premiere numbers really aren’t anything to be happy about. The two-hour premiere drew a 1.7 HH rating and 2.35M viewers, with 1.12M viewers within the A18-49 demo, and 1.32M within the Adults 25-54 demo.

Well...

Ironically, I watched it and really liked it. Jay said Universe has more of a Battlestar Galactica feel. I liked that it had a lot of action.

I wouldn't have premiered it on a Friday night. I'd guess that a lot of their target audience would be out on a Friday night.

I'm just the opposite. Because it has a BSG feel, I won't be watching it. And two people boinking within the first fifteen minutes? For real? As other people said, this isn't Stargate. This is BSG/ST:Voy/Sliders that just happen to have a gate. SG has always been about adventurous exploration, not about darkness, despair and deathdeathdeath. And that's what's putting a lot of SG fans off.

I haven't seen it yet and maybe I will like it on its merits but frankly, there is a "that serves them right" mentality in me right now for how dismissive they were about the "old" Stargate fans, about SGA and how they praised their shiny new toy.

Seems they shouldn't have been so quick to spit on the hands that fed them for ten years, after all.

Well, unless something drastic (read: awesome) happens soon, I'm thinking this might be just a one-season thing. And I'm not sure I'd be too sad about that. Which in and of itself is sad. :(

(Man, if I'm going to keep talking about SGU, I should probably pull out one of my awesomely sarcastic McKay icons.)

I had no intention to watch it, BSG-like shows with its darkness and despair and hate between characters don't appeal to me, but now that I read the spoilers, I won't watch it for sure. Better yet, I will give it a wide berth O.o

I don't think that it'll be a one-season thingy. They invested too much in it. They cooed and oh-ed and told us that it would be the best thing since sliced bread so they can't afford to admit defeat. And if there's the slightest uptick for the upcoming episodes or if it stays at the current level, we'll be hearing about how awesome performance it gives...

Hehe, I made a McKay!sarcasm icon, too :P

I watched the premiere and I'm still on the fence about it. I'm a big fan of scifi of all kinds (although I didn't care for BSG). I liked SGU but I didn't love it (or even like it a lot. If the first hour hadn't continually jumped back and forth in the time line I probably would have liked it more.

As long as this heads into a survival/exploration thing and not a political infighting mishmash (one of the reasons I didn't care for BSG), I'll be just fine with it. I'll give it a couple of more episodes before passing final judgment.

Good for you.

For me it was easy not to watch it. In this show there's nothing left of what I loved in SGA. I don't like the actors, I don't like the characters. And gratuitous sex (boinking someone against the wall? really?), killing off characters and politicking is just not my thing.

But to each their own :)

Yeah, I have to admit, it's nothing like SGA and I doubt I'll like it even half as much. They even say that in their promos - that it's pretty different from the other Stargate series, edgier, more 'sexy'.

The sex against the wall doesn't bother me. I think it was a little necessary to showcase their elicit relationship, which is probably going to come back and bite them on the ass because now the woman is a direct subordinate to the Lt. Yeah, they could have shown their relationship in some other way but I think it's mainly just physical for them so showing coy glances and sly touches wasn't going to be enough.

The main drawback for me right now is that, agreeing with you, I don't like the characters. The only actors (left) I really know are Robert Carlysle and Ming-Na and while I do like them, I don't like their characters so far.

To keep me watching they're going to have to hook me in with at least a couple of their characters. True, most people aren't their best under extreme pressure (they can't all be John Sheppards *G*) but a little more likability is going to be needed to keep me.
