Yup, in the end I decided to go with S4, to get back into the apocalyptic storyline :)
4x01, Lazarus Rising: After the train wreck that was S3, the premiere of S4 was a pleasant surprise for me. I remember how disappointed I was by 3x01 (at least compared to 2x01), but this time, the show hit the ground running. Dean, Bobby, Sam, Castiel... Awesome! The episode rocked my socks like nobody's business, really. And I was glad to see that the show went back to its previous washed-out colors instead of the bright and colorful tone they chose for S3 (which was another thing that I intensely disliked about that season, the colors just didn't fit a horror show!)
4x02, Are You There, God? It's Me... Dean Winchester: I loved Sam and Dean talking about the existence of God and angels. I loved that Dean doubted everything, as usually. I loved that he asked the hard questions: If there's a God, why doesn't he give a crap about good people? It was really great. Also, the little chat between Dean and Meg - it showed how much the show progressed since S1: In S1 and S2, the guys tried to save the "meat suits" and exorcise the demons which is all good and fine when you encounter two, three demonic possesions a year - but when you literally swim in them? It's not that the guys don't care, it's just not realistically possible to exorcise every one of them when you're fighting a war and they are soldiers throwing themselves at you. You just hack and stab and shoot to survive. I think it's a nice development.

Btw, I think my favorite episode of S2 was 'Houses of the Holy.' I'm probably going to do well with the whole angels vs. demons arc.

Sera Gamble, one of the writers, said that they wrote it in such a way that Dean looked like he felt as if the priest was talking about him when he mentioned Archangel Michael :)
