You know what's really strange? When you realize that you like someone's fics, that you like the way they portray your favorite characters, that you like their plots etc. - and you can't stand the author because she's always stirring up crap, feeling all righteous speaking to dumb masses in need of enlightenment. Right.

For those writers, I'll just read their fics without leaving any comments. Looking at your icon, I guess the person in question is not from the SPN fandom?

It is very tough to find that the person behind the art isn't "all that and a bag of chips."
A while ago, I heard some disturbing things about a musician whose songs I loved, and then for the longest time I could not enjoy listening to his music. But I deprived myself of something I liked, so now I try to enjoy the work they put out and not focus on the personality of the artist, be it writer, musician or actor.
I guess if I found out something truly horrific, I'd have to boycott them, just to do the right thing...

That sounds familiar! There are a few writer's whose work I enjoy but I readily pass by 99% of their non-fiction posts because not only do I not agree with their opinion, I think they're full of crap

There are a considerable number of actors that affect me that way, too. I enjoy their work, just keep me away from their personal life and opinions because they really come across as self-important douche bags. o_O

Nope, she's not a part of the SPN (or CWRPS) fandom - she's one of those who spout how racist/sexist/misogynist the show is. I chose this icon because if she saw it, she would tell me how racist it is, the white guy in the front, the black in the back, separated and out of focus. It wouldn't even occur to her that the picture might have just pleased me esthetically.

I usually try to separate the actors from their roles because some actors disappointed me to the point where I couldn't even watch their show anymore. I mean, you have actors like Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki or Joe Flanigan and then there are others, like Jeffrey Donovan from Burn Notice who just got busted for DUI *sigh*

Yes, I agree about the actors. I mean, I love Fast and Furious but I'm not sure if I would find Paul Walker or Vin Diesel all that likable in RL, that's why I try to stay away from any background info about them to not spoil the movie... Yup, a chicken ;)

The thing about DUI's however is that we've all made stupid decisions and have to deal with them. With celebs it's always a HUGE DEAL OMG THEY'RE NOT PERFECT (I'm not saying you're taking this attitude, just that I've seen it) and it's like, yeah, duh. I mean yeah he's not a perfect person but neither are any of us and that doesn't make what they do any better or worse. Y'know?

Dunno, I guess I just like Jeffrey a lot. He's very sweet and nice on his twitter. XD

You know what this reminds me of? The Great RaceFail of earlier this year. I mean I wasn't even in it but a lot of it was people exploding because the author's viewpoints didn't match up with their own. It was... yeah. I think my decision at that time was ignore the whole thing and read what I like and decide what I'm going to get out of it.

I mean if you like this author's stories enough can you just read them and ignore her/he/it?

Edit: You know I feel like I'm coming across all harsh and judgy here and I hope you realize that's not what I'm doing. Just had some thoughts to share. :)

The thing with me is that I have zero tolerance for drunk people behind the wheel - I have zero tolerance for drunk people period. I don't drink, not beer, not wine, nothing. And my motto is: You want to drive, DON'T DRINK! It's as easy as that and everybody's own decision, no one is pouring the alcohol down their throat and sitting them down behind the wheel.

I know that it sounds harsh but I've had a personal experience with someone who was alcoholic and that totally cured me out of any sympathy for drunk people.

Oh yes, the racefail *head/desk* I stayed out of it after I had been called a "fucking whitey" for daring to disagree with someone's point. And to be honest, I defriended all people who kept dragging that on and on and on. Harsh, I know, but LJ is my fannish place where I want to squee about movies and shows and not do politics.

No but until I know how exactly the situation went down I'm not judging him for it. Like I do with everyone since I know that news media doesn't usually portray the situation correctly, they're after a story. I'm not saying it wasn't stupid of him to drive while drunk but simply that's not everything he's ever done in his life and to judge him simply on one mistake *is* harsh in my opinions.

*shrugs* But like I said that's how I feel about it. You are of course entitled to your own opinions. XD I'm kinda terrible about arguing out a point so this is me, backing off. ;)

Honestly both sides had some major fail going on there. The thing about the internet is that it's so dang easy to get into those attitudes and points where you're not listening to anything anymore and you have no one to nudge you and go 'they're allowed to have an opinion that differs from yours and there are better ways to talk to someone than yelling'.

Hey I get that, LJ is pretty much my fannish place as well and probably the thing I hate most about that is when the meta overtakes a lot and it's like blech, can we go back to squee now?

Date: 2009-08-05 08:22 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] katikat.livejournal.com
Hehe, I didn't want to squee-harsh about your favorite guy ;)

Like, I love Jensen but I was disappointed that some time ago, he did a campaign against smoking - and now he smokes too, kinda hypocritical *sigh* That's why I kinda prefer not to know much about the actors' private life. In every person's past one'll find something disappointing, that's just life.

Date: 2009-08-05 08:26 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] katikat.livejournal.com
Exactly! I always try to say "let's agree on disagreeing" but some people just don't know when to back off.

Like, in SPN, I know that there'll always be people who love Jensen, love Jared, love Dean, love Sam, hate Dean, hate Sam, hate all girls, hate some girls and love others. What bothers me is when someone starts meta-ing the show and insisting that their opinion is the only one that counts. Or when someone squees in their LJ and someone else totally harshes them :(

*Giggle* To be honest I didn't realize just *how* much I liked him until now. Thankfully I can laugh at myself. XD

Yeah I remember when an actor I was rather fond of turned out to be a huge huge jerk, especially to women. It was really disconcerting and terrible and you're right, it does tend to color my viewpoints of their work then. Ah life.

Date: 2009-08-05 08:38 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bendtothesun.livejournal.com
It's not even that you're saying you have to respect their opinion, simply the idea that they have the right to a different opinion to you. And didn't we all learn as kids that stomping/whining/yelling is going to get you absolutely nothing?

Oh man squee harshing in personal LJ's is just douchey douchey douchey. I can understand wanting to foster discussion, especially if you know the person and you know they'll welcome it but dude *shakes head* Yeah SPN fandom... is kinda non-existant for me these days. If only because there tend to be a lot of hate that seems really excessive. And I'd rather not bog myself down with reading that stuff. I don't need that in my life.

Oh btw did you ever manage to check out Warehouse 13? I'm rather smitten with it atm.

I have the first part downloaded but I haven't watched it yet, no time. At the mo, I'm trying to catch up on S1 of Leverage - and various manga! I hear that Joe Flanigan was in W13 last night and that he looked pretty :) (I really hope that he gets a show of his own soon *crosses fingers*)

BTW, the person I was talking about in my entry called W13 racist and misogynist *snorts* But then, some people call Castle sexist and I love that show, so...

He was quite pretty! I will admit to shipping him slightly with the two main characters (I don't have a main ship or anything so right now it's just the lulz). And even if I don't think his acting is the greatest he was rather good as well (it may be an issue of getting used to him, the main actress seemed really bad in one episode I saw but watching them all she's actually rather good). =D I saw! Well since Leverage is so good I suppose I'll give you a pass. ;)

But... out of the five person cast (main and reoccuring) three are women and one is black and the main female character is frequently shown to kick a ton of ass. *Sigh* They're one of those people who have to find *something* to bitch about right?
