GW posted a brand new trailer for SGU and I... I'm not sure what to think of it *sigh*

You see, the trailer is visually stunning. I mean, it's Stargate, did anyone doubt that the special effects would be great? But... it didn't really look like a Stargate show to me. I mean, it felt like I was watching a trailer for BSG.

I think, I think that my biggest problem is that except for Lou Diamond Phillips (and maybe Brian J. Smith) the actors just don't appeal to me, and especially not Robert Carlyle and Justin Luis, the two leads. There just isn't this... instant magnetism, I guess, there.

With SG-1, I got into the show through Richard Dean Anderson and fell in love with the Jack vs. Daniel bickering. Into SGA I got through Joe Flanigan and fell in love with the John vs. Rodney bickering. But with this show...

Col. Young and Dr. Rush are like Adama and Balthar in BSG, the real animosity and backstabbing included and that's just... not really my thing. I mean, this is a Stargate show, something I would love to love but, I need lovable characters! And so far, none of those are even likable!

You know I wouldn't be shocked if a lot of BSG people simply moved onto this project after BSG ended. The camera work and directing is very much that, although some of that is TV style evolving and changing vs what was the norm when SG-1 started.

You know it weirdly seems less military oriented for being a military show. Y'know? I'll probably still watch it, I kinda almost instantly liked Carlyle and I'm intrigued to see what they're actually going to do with it vs what the trailer makes us think is gonna happen. However I will miss the go off and explore other planets aspects, people trapped on a something or other and trying to find their way back isn't very interesting to me.

The thing is, what I've always loved about SG was the team, completely different people who are suddenly stuck together - but not in a bad way. That's what's different about this show.

Like, in SGA's Rising, when Sheppard wanted to go and rescue Sumner and Teyla and Rodney started protesting about the amount of addresses etc. and Sheppard told him that yes, there were 720 combinations and that Rodney should go and try every one of them. In the audio commentary, Joe Flanigan loved that Sheppard didn't force Rodney to do it from his position as the military leader, that it opened the possibility of them becoming friends. In SGU, Young and Rush hate each other's guts to the point of sabotaging each other's efforts. And that's what I dislike intensely about that. Compare Young and Rush with Sheppard and McKay.

So far, it seems like in this show, the whole "military dummies" vs. "geeks" will be forced to the extreme whereas in SG-1 and especially later in SGA, both sides had profound respect for each other and their bickering was always teasing, they never tried to really kill each other.

Just not enuf thunkability there, sorry to say. I think it just looks very flashy on the surface, but every sci-fi drama/romance cliche is presented in a nice little package. I am still feeling insulted by their treatment of SGA, this isn't enuf to make me change my mind.
I probably won't tune in, after all.
Oh well.
PS - Brian Smith is far too young, and I don't even want to imagine slashing Carlyle and Luis's characters...

I agree. Luis and Carlyle are... I hate to say it... ugly. Luis looks like a perpetualy sad St. Bernard. And someone posted somewhere, all the young 'uns are way too young for their rank. There's too much death and sex promoted for my liking. I want FRIENDSHIP! So far, I don't see much chance for them to just... goof around, be a team without trying to one-up each other in the fight for dominance, military vs. science. I fear that they will push the "soldiers are dumb" and "geeks can't fight" issue to the extreme. On SGA, we had a military commander who had Mensa level IQ. I never understood why they kept trying to dumb Sheppard down.

Also, I'm not a steam-punk fan. The ship looks great on the outside, the special effects are awesome, but on the inside, it looks like a ship from the old black-n-white Flash Gordon, very retro. I kinda hate that. I loved SGA better than SG-1 because of Atlantis, the copper walls and stained glass, waterfalls and balconies. Destiny looks like a gopher's hole X/
