SGA 517+518
Dec. 25th, 2008 05:25 pmHa, I finally caught up on SGA! I watched episode 518 first, because from the description, I knew that I wouldn't like it much and I was right. The episode was boring as a whole. 517 on the other hand was great! I loved it. Too bad that there haven't been more eps like this one lately *sigh*
518, Identity: You know, even if I didn't think that Jennifer was a whiny baby until this ep, I would think so now. I mean, all she could do was stand there with her eyes wide open and stutter. Didn't she know how to stick fight not so long ago? In Tracker, she took out a Wraith and now she couldn't handle a simple human?
The parts that I did like:
* John calling Ronon "Chewie" and Ronon knowing what he was talking about. Hehe, I can so see them watching Star Wars together :P
* Ronon not being fooled by "Jennifer".
* Neeva stabbing Zelenka - at least some suspense! And Rodney's shocked face when he realized that yes, Zelenka was really hurt!
517, Infection: This ep was really good. We had the team, action, suspense, Lorne, special effects, Todd... And even the moral ambiguity of Sheppard's decision was spot-on: his priority has always been the safety of his own people.
Stuff that I liked:
* All the Sheppard/Todd scenes. Oh my, Joe Flanigan has a great chemistry with "baddies": first Kolya and now Todd. And both were rather obsessed with him.
* Lorne. I love seeing Sheppard and Lorne working together. I don't know why. It's just really cool :)
* Ronon always asking "Are you sure about that?"
* Woolsey and all the Woolsey/Sheppard scenes. They have become quite a team, haven't they?
* The special effects!
* Teyla in charge!
And stuff that I didn't like: Keller doubting herself. AGAIN! I mean, I could understand it if she a) wasn't the chief medical officer of Atlantis and b) didn't do it on a weekly basis. Is there anything at all that she's really good at? So far, all we've seen was her rubbing her hands and shuffling her feet and whining about not being sure of what she was doing!
But other than that, a really good episode :)
I will wait until eps 519 and 520 actually air before I watch them because I want to be able to download them in a good quality and squee together with other people! So no spoiling me! I have no idea what these eps are about!

Date: 2008-12-25 05:40 pm (UTC)This is something that really struck me because the actress plays her the exact same way she did Kaylee on Firefly. Only Kaylee was supposed to be a wide-eyed innocent who couldn't fight. And even she was confident in her mechanical skills.
Keller is the chief medical officer in another galaxy in practically a war zone and she was just a frightened bunny all throughout this ep. All but two guards lead her through a wood towards her execution and she doesn't even attempt to struggle and get away from them. Rodney was never a physical fighter but he would have at least tried. Even Kavanagh would have tried.
And ditto on the "oh noez, I'm so insecure" in the other episode. I don't want her to be a Mary Sue, god knows, but in that stupid environmental episode she was all confident to condescend to Rodney and a whole room full of superbrains. But when it's her on the spot it becomes "poor pity me"?
I tried looking at the second half of Season 5 objectively but it honestly IS 95 % Keller and the McKeller ship focus that made it suck so much.

I won't spoil but will say that the technical quality of the episodes I saw was no different than the "normal" episodes. It isn't grainy or anything like that if you're worried on that account.

Date: 2008-12-25 06:30 pm (UTC)And about Jennifer, I just don't get how she even got to be in Atlantis. Don't they have to take psych tests or something? As you said, it's basically a war zone!
