You know, I thought that the SPN fandom was bonkers with the rapist!Sam and abuser!Dean theme they have going these days but SGA managed to top it!

On GateWorld, someone started a thread called "Does Stargate tolerate abusive relationships?" You read right. Basically, they suggest that the SG writers condone abusive relationships based on the episode Irresistible - sleazy Lucius - and the way Larrin keeps beating/torturing Sheppard whenever they meet. Oh, and let's not forget Vala's sexual harassment of Daniel vs. Daniel physically manhandling/verbally abusing Vala. Oh yes.

I mean, I would get their Lucius argument - if they related the "date-rape drug" thing as they call it to both genders, women AND men, because Lucius did use it on both men and women. Just because Lucius didn't run around touching men doesn't mean he didn't do it. Just remember the scene with Sheppard in the prison cell, when he told John that soon enough, John would do anything what Lucius told him to, that John would beg to be allowed to please Lucius. If that couldn't be interpreted as a planned rape, then I don't know what else could.

So, if said party included men into the whole raping thing, then I would agree. But when she excluded one gender just because, she totally undermined her own argument in the need to present women as hapless victims.

I just don't get why people feel the need to try and see simple horror/sci-fi shows as deep psychological thrillers *shakes head*

You know I think that's what irritates me most about the spn arguments as well, it's not the eternal wanking over misogyny or whatever they're on about these days. It's the idea that women need to be exalted over the men in these shows and that if they're not they're obviously victims. Which is just the wrong step in the other direction.

Just *argh* the victim argument (male or female) pisses me off more than anything I think. It's taking away a persons power and making the characters into something they're not. Yeah bad shit happens but that's life. Whether on tv or not.

AND I'M SO FREAKING TIRED OF THE 'IF THEY WRITE IT THEY CONDONE IT'. That's not how life works, learn to be less stupid.

Exactly! I think that people should get more hobbies. Then they wouldn't have the time to come up with crap like that X(

O-kay. I didn't like Lucius because to me he did in a sense rape anyone he turned his powers on, male or female. And I didn't find it haha-funny in the episode.

But Larrin and John? Huh? They were antagonistic in their first meeting, meaning they both fought as hard as they could for their respective goals and sometimes physically. They were not "in" a relationship to speak of. And later on how was it abusive? He asked for the Traveller's help in this Replikator battle, they helped.

But you know I'm sure Teyla regularly beats up on - forgot his name - Kanaan? Which is why we never see him anymore. He is the battered househusband. Muhahahaha.

Can you imagine if John actually defended himself and slapped her back? Those same fans would have turned the argument and John would suddenly be an abuser who beats women. Ridiculous!

Oh god yes. Sometimes it looks like men are seriously expected to stand there and let themselves be killed if necessary so not to use violence against poor, widdle women. To me that does both genders no favours.

Please be all watching the Highlander episode "Chivalry" on how that works out.

EXACTLY. I'm totally with you. People are picking apart these shows like they're Shakespeare. It's just a TV show, it doesn't have 29348723947 hidden meanings.

Then the same argument could be applied to fan vids using this source footage.

Try sharing that view point over on [livejournal.com profile] vidding. ;-)

Exactly! It's about kicking butt and getting scared, it's not an after school special!

I really hope this doesn't mean that it's going to spread to all fandoms. People really need to focus on the fact that the shows they watch and the characters in them aren't actually real!

I don't know what's wrong with people these days. They are just out to poke holes into every fun thing!
