Dragonlance
Mar. 26th, 2007 05:25 pmThese days, I've been translating the Dragonlance books. They'll probably never be my first choice in books but there are things that I really love about them: continuity and details.
Dragonlance has dozens and dozens of characters and you get to know every one of them. From their birth, throughout their lives to their deaths. There are many novels and many short stories in this series and all of them offer you a glimpse into the life of one or more characters, allow you to grow fonder of them.
So far, my favorite character is Tanis Half-Elven. A half-breed of elf and human who suffered for his lineage, found happiness with the elven princess Laurana, saw his son get hurt by the same hatred and bigotry and died a needless death while saving the son of his good friend who was a sworn enemy of his at the same time. He has quite the tragic fate and it made me cry when he died.
Some characters appear only to die shortly after. Like Steel Brightsword. He popped up only to get killed fighting Chaos, the Father of all Gods. Tanin and Sturm Majere... So sad, really.
I think that the funniest character is Tasslehoff Burrfoot, a kender. He is such a happy-go-lucky little guy, curious beyond what's healthy for him and always willing to cheer you up - or steal something. He knows absolutely no fear and the scenes where a friend of his dies and he suddenly feels his heart aching and he, all confused, doesn't understand why or why there are tears in his eyes, are so heartbreaking.
So, all in all, it's quite an entertaining series with very interesting characters :)
Oh, and this is a little note for my flist - I know that a lot of you friended me because of anime-related stuff or the fanfics I used to write. I now switched over to TV series and all my creative juices go into my translations so I don't feel like writing anything even though the ideas are still there.
So, if you want to de-friend me because our interests differ way too much these days, go ahead, you have my blessing :D No hard feelings!

Re: I like having you friended ^_^
Date: 2007-03-29 08:00 pm (UTC)I don't know many in RL who like Raistlin, and just a handful online (That aren't trying to get into Raist's robes with an OC ~_^) My best friend likes Dalamar the best really. And for me, yeah I'm not a big fan of Raist in the Chronicals...but I have a soft spot for brothers taking care of one another..and they did quite a bit of that in The Legends Trilogy.
I find it humorous when I come across DL artwork where Dalamar is a perv trying to get into Raist's pants.
Have you read Soulforge yet? Its good. Its a nice tale, (mainly about the Majeres) but the rest of the gang is there too and they're all so young (well except for Flint ~_^) and cute.

Date: 2007-03-29 08:16 pm (UTC)You know, I wonder how Gilthas reacted to Tanis' death. I mean, Gil's own foolishness made him the ruler of Qualinesti and after the coronation and Tanis' exile from Qualinesti, he didn't see his father again before Tanis died. I think that's rather sad :( I actually cried like a baby when Tanis was killed :(
And I do like Dalamar. Kinda. Sorta. But I didn't like him in the short sotry Sacrifice about Gil. He knew what was going on but instead of telling Tanis so that Tanis could save his son, Dalamar went on with the plan he forged with the senator :( I know it's tough to decide between helping Takhisis and helping his friend but I don't think that Dalamar has that many friends to betray them :(

Date: 2007-03-31 12:40 am (UTC)The book above is the story of Gil as ruler of Qualinesti..I haven't read much of it though. Its part of the Chaos War Series. when I believe the dragons taken over the lands (long story) I think Gil finds out about Tanis's death in it, don't recall how he reacts, but I believe Laurana is devistated.
And there is a book about his Uncle Gil to, talks about where he off and disappeared to.
I think the only one Dalamar calls friend and the only one he actually cares about/fears is Raistlin.
