Book: "Smoke and Shadows" by Tanya Huff

katikatTanya Huff's "Smoke and Shadows" is the first book in the series that one can consider a sequel to her "Blood" series about the vampire Henry Fitzroy, the bastard son of the king Henry VIII. The main hero of "Smoke and Shadows", Tony Foster, used to be Henry's lover but they decided to go separate ways and stay friends even though not lovers.
In this book, Tony became the Production Assistant of the new TV vampire sleuth series "Darkest Night" that's being filmed in Vancouver. He is very good at his job, dreams about becoming a director and he simply enjoys his life away from demons, wizards, walking mummies etc. - meaning the life he led while living with Henry. But in the end nothing turns up as he wanted - he discovers that there are other worlds out there and one of the worlds was conquered by the Shadow Lord who now starts sending his minions into our world. Through a gate. Which is directly on the set. And now it's up to Tony to save the world.
I will admit that the book seems to drag a bit in places but other than that it's a fantastic read. Tony is witty and sarcastic. Lee, the supporting actor of the show and Tony's object of desire is a gorgeous hunk. Henry still cares about Tony and pops into his life whenever he is needed. And Arra Pelindrake, the old lady from the special effects, is a wizard and a very very very reluctant hero.
Maybe because I haven't read the "Blood" series by T. Huff, I didn't feel a strong connection between Henry and Tony and cheered for Tony and Lee. But then, Henry would stay alone. I think he should find a new boyfriend. Someone gorgeous... and with nerves of steel! X)
There was one line in this book that I loved to pieces:
"It took him forever to get to downtown Vancouver although Tony had to admit that saving the world by public transportation was a particularly Canadian way to do things."
XD Can we say Benton Frazer?
I would give this book 4,5 stars out of five. And the next book in this series is on its way to my greedy hands :D
