You know, lately, I've noticed that a lot of subbing groups doesn't do .avi files and hardsubs anymore but goes for all sort of other abbreviation of file types. I really don't like softsubs because all the ones I've encountered so far, run together and are unreadable at some points - like when the subbers try to set the notes up on the screen but they end up mingled together with the actual subs. Oh, and the fact that the subbing groups become rather annoyed when you ask them how you should actually play their stuff is another point entirely. Why, oh why can't they keep to .avi files? I know that .mkv and .ogm/.ogg files are of a higher quality but not every player can play them without tons and tons of codecs! Argh!

And what do you actually prefer?

I do prefer .avi more than anything else. Mainly since it's so easy to deal with. I've caved to .mp4 for Eyeshield 21, but anything else I'd rather not watch it. .mkv. and .ogm/.ogg just don't like my computer. >.>;;

And I have caved to .mkv files for Simoun and some other really good anime. But only .mkv hardsubs. Softsubs, I can do without, really :(

I prefer AVIs myself, but for an entirely more evol reason--I bought a DivX DVD player, so after I burn the AVIs to a DVD, I can watch all my torrent episodes on my TV! No more computer woes...

And if you don't like the MKV, OGM, etc etc ad nauseam, you might try alltoavi, a program I found on videohelp.com that automatically converts (including softsubs) pretty much anything into an AVI with hardsubs. Plus, it's FREE. The only downside is the fact you have to keep the original files intact to seed back, but once that's done and you've burned off the data, joy joy joy!

(who constantly moans about this MKV/OGM love affair the fansubbers have =)

I will have to try the alltoavi thingy. I've heard about it and if it's that good... :) .avi files are so easy to play. Why, oh why can't the fansubbers stick with them? :(

*lol* at the moment I'm actually the only one who voted that likes .mkv. And it's not even that I don't like .avi. The most anime I download has this format. It has its upsides because I can burn and watch it with my DVD Player but qualitywise I prefer .mkv. *ducks head from flying bricks*
Plus I never had any problems with it. Maybe that's why I can easily cope with them. My computer is not the newest either (4 years old and starting to do crazy things) but everything works fine. I can only recommend downloading (and downloading the new versions after a few months) the Combined Community Codec Pack as this always has the newest codecs and only the ones you really need. See here: http://www.cccp-project.net/

I've tried everything. From CCCP to other codecs but my Media Player keeps refusing these. I have to use VLC since nothing else can play this stuff :( But on the other hand, VLC is way smaller and uses just a little memory so it's good that way too :)

sounds tough... What player do you use? Windows Media Player is not really compatible with most codecs out there. I will look up about VLC as I don't know that one. I have two other ones installed actually. ZoomPlayer and BSPlayer. Maybe changing the player would help you. Isn't it a pain to convert files before you watch them?

I used to use Media Player. And Real Player. And BSPlayer. But then I ended up with VLC and I'm quite content with it. It can play even softsubs .mkv files and I couldn't force any other player to play them. Maybe it's because I'm using Windows Millenium Edition. It has as many holes as the Swiss cheese, really.

Ok, this problem of yours won't leave me alone apparently and I would really like to help you beacuse I know how annoying playback issues can be. So I googled for some answers concerning .mkvs in general (since I hope it's not Windows ME's fault in your case *thanks Microsoft for problem-ridden systems*). I stumbled upon animesuki's forum and I hope it will shed some light on the issue.

It appears that WMP, VLC and BSplayer are actually not the best choices to play .mkv. So I guess one problem is the player. Zoomplayer comes with the CCCP and should be able to play everything.

Some info on what .mkv actually is, beacuse I never bothered to check before.

Therefore I would recommend that you delete every codec you have installed (including divx and xvid), reboot your computer and get the newest versions of xvid and divx and then install CCCP with Zoomplayer (or any other player you like see list here
http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=Media_Players#Zoom_Player_.28Supported.29 ). Then it will hopefully work. If not shoot me XD

uh, just read the CCCP Avanced FAQ and it says that it is not neccessary to install divx or xvid if you don't want to encode any video. To save you the trouble it's better not to install divx because that tends to bring conficts of its own. *pulls on hair* Why does this have to be so complicated?!
