How to play softsubs?

I have a question - how can I play .mkv files with softsubs? When I try VLC which usually can take any .mkv files, it shuts down. And Windows Media Player says that there are "embedded true type fonts" and that it needs to download a codec but it doesn't download anything and then just the music starts. What codec do I need?

MPC couldn't play it either. But! I found out that softsubs work with the latest version of VLC! Thank the goddess, really. I was scrambling up the wall here, really!
