Commissioned fanart?
Jul. 15th, 2006 03:11 pmI've noticed that a lot of people on my flist pay for fanart. And so I ask: Is it okay to pay for FANart? What do you think?
I know that my question and reasoning will raise some hackles but... I'm wholeheartedly convinced that it's completely wrong to pay for FANart. It's like paying for fanfiction. Or for fansubs. Or for scanlations. I'm all for buying ART, but not FANart. It goes against the whole foundation upon which the fandom is built and why it's still tolerated by TPTB - that it's for free and no one gaines anything from it.
You can say that you don't pay for the picture itself but for the work and time of the artist - but that's a definition of a job, of earning money by using characters they didn't create themselves. And that's stealing, no matter how you look at it. The Japanese animators may be benevolent - but how long? And when they'll finally have enough, all the fanartists will go down, not just the ones who sell their FANart.
I'm sorry if you disagree with me, but there are few things out there that I'm that convinced of.
ETA: I decided to freeze the comments. Not that I don't want you to answer or talk to me but it's obvious that we won't see eye to eye in this case which may lead to harsh words being said and later regretted on both sides :)
