Vulnerable

by KatiKat

Haruka started into wakefulness, blinking and taking in the dark room. He froze, not knowing where he was for a moment. Then the full moon broke through the heavy clouds and in its light he recognized the sparse furniture of his own bedroom.

What...? How did he...? Dozens of half-formed questions raced through his confused mind and a frown settled over his features. He remembered the ship, the canon blast and Raikou... their fight. He had lost...

With that realization he stiffened, fear for Kantarou's safety seizing his chest. He tried to sit up but suddenly found out that he couldn't move, that something was holding him down, something besides his own bone-deep aches and weakness. Turning his head to the left and down he looked at the unexpected burden weighing down on his chest and...

He blinked, an expression of surprise settling on his bruised face. There, snuggled to him with his white-haired head resting on Haruka's chest lay Kantarou, curled up and sleeping.

"Kantarou?" Haruka whispered and raised one hand to shake his master awake, knowing how uncomfortable it must be, sleeping in his clothes and on the blankets instead of under them. The only reaction he received though, was a mumbled protest. Despite his exhaustion and the danger they just went through, Haruka smiled.

Freeing his left arm and the blankets from underneath the body of his oblivious master, he brought the pliant Kantarou closer, sneaking an arm around his narrow shoulders to hug him protectively. Kantarou murmured in appreciation and rubbed his cold cheek against Haruka's chest as if trying to melt into him, huddling closer to the source of warmth. The white-haired man laid one arm around Haruka's chest and hugged him carefully, even in sleep mindful of the tengu's injuries.

Haruka savored his master's weight, the knowledge of Kantarou being safe and sound. Though when his mind flashed back to what happened in the woods, to the moment when Kantarou stepped in front of him to protect him from the blast, armed only with his charms... He froze again, gripping the smaller man's shoulders tightly as the possibilities of what might have happened to the one person he held most precious made his heart race.

Kantarou frowned, groaning in protest as he with his ear pressed to Haruka's chest took in the tengu's sudden state of distress. Whispering words of comfort and rubbing Kantarou's back gently, Haruka made the effort to calm down his racing heart. Better not think about such things, he decided, but the fact that their enemies were still out there, lying in wait, watching and preparing for their next move, wouldn't let him forget what had happened or what might have been.

He wasn't used to worrying about the well-being of others, especially not about humans. But ever since he met Kantarou who not only gave him a name but all his love and warmth too, he began to change, perceiving others not as enemies first. With Kantarou and Yoko-chan, with Suzu, Sugino-sama and Muu-chan he had built a small family, a thing he had never thought about before.

He looked down at the lazy bundle of a man, resting so trustingly on his chest and a warm feeling unfurled in his stomach and settled around his heart, a strange desire to... protect and... love? the man who had enslaved him but also showed him the bright colors of being at the same time.

Haruka frowned again, unaware of rubbing Kantarou's back, as he pondered his situation. Was a tengu even able to love? He had never given it much thought before, wasn't even sure what love should feel like. But this almost painful warmth concentrating in the vicinity of his heart surely reminded him of the feelings poets described in their works.

Snuggling closer, Kantarou threw one leg over Haruka's and mumbled quietly in his sleep. "Hmm... Haruka... safe..." He sighed in contentment, caressing Haruka's chest in short strokes.

The tengu raised his aching head and kissed his master's white hair. "Yes, safe," he assured Kantarou, hugging him tight. "And I swear, you'll always be safe too. As long as I live I will protect you with my life. From everybody, even from myself," he promised, meaning every word seriously.

Unaware of the promise given, Kantarou slept on, safe in the arms of the ogre-eating tengu, the most dangerous creature in the world whose heart, as tender and vulnerable as everyone else's, he held tightly in his hands without even knowing it.

The End

That was one of my favorite episodes and this was the perfect fic for it. I think that last line was the sweetest thing I've ever read. ♥ There really needs to be more Tactics fic out there.
