Title: 47 Ronin (2013)
Cast: Keanu Reeves (Kai), Hiroyuki Sanada (Oishi), Ko Shibasaki (Mika), Tadanobu Asano (Kira), Jin Akanishi (Chikara)
Rating: 6/10
This is quite a moving tale of honor and sacrifice. I know that it's based on a real story, but this was basically a fairytale, very much in the vein of Japanese legends, with dragons, tengu and other beasts. But if you expect a happy ending, don't forget that this is a Japanese legend, so you get a very Japanese ending...
I've seen many people complain about how this is once again a tale of a "white savior" which it is not. A) Keanu Reeves is not white, he has never been white and he will never be white, he is half white, half Asian (Chinese and Hawaiian, if I'm not mistaken) and his mixed background is very important for the tale, for why he's shunned by the others, an outcast in the society, considered unfit to be a samurai. B) It's not actually Kai's story at all, but Oishi's, it's the story of his search for justice for their dead master.
The special effects, the costumes, the setting, the fights... everything is so excellent, so bright, so vibrant. So, why only 6 stars? Because the beginning is really slow. It's not until halfway through that it gets your heart pumping!
Keanu Reeves looks great in this movie, as is usual. But who really stunned me with his looks, was Jin Akanishi. Wow, just... WOW! Simply stunning.
