Next year, it'll be 20 years since this movie was made. 20 YEARS! And I still have a soft spot for it in my heart. And even though Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin keep bitching about the shows, how their execs didn't go the way they had planned, I hope they will never make their own continuation, a thing they keep threatening us with. It's at least 15 years too late for that. Today's sci-fi fans know Stargate because of SG-1 and SGA, maybe even SGU (with a little bit of teeth gnashing, that show brought a LOT of bad blood into the fandom!), not the original movie.
I have loved, LOVED Daniel since I laid my eyes on him. I used to have such a weakness for James Spader. I thought they chose Michael Shanks perfectly for Daniel in SG-1. With Richard Dean Anderson... his O'Neill couldn't have been more different than Kurt Russell's. I mean, by the time the show started, Jack had time to get over his grief, I know, but RDA's Jack was funny and goofy and sarcastic, something I just can't see Russell's ever being.
And now I feel like re-watching the show. Would you believe that I still haven't seen seasons 6-10? Not properly anyway. I have the show on DVD, all of it, but when they killed off Daniel and replaced him with Jonas... I lost interest in the show. I have always liked the concept, but my main reason for watching was Daniel Jackson. And I never got back into it, not really. So, I still have 5 seasons of one of the best sci-fi shows ever to watch. I guess I should get on to it, right?
