I finally received the movie Brick on DVD. Even used, it ran smoothly - but! There were no subtitles on the DVD which was really unfortunate because the dialog's so fast that sometimes it's hard to understand. In the end, I was glad that I got my hands on the dubbed version too so that I could actually get what they were talking about.

The movie's really good. I loved the atmosphere that Rian Johnson set up, the deserted school, the deserted streets, usually sunset or early morning. And the music was amazing, especially the central theme that went with the credits at the beginning and with the DVD options. Gorgeous.

I also really liked the mystery of "Who killed Emily?" that turned into "Who set up Emily?" once Brendan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) found out who the killer was. I admired his courage, basically going with his head through the wall, stirring up as much crap as possible to see where it landed. And his back-up plans within back-up plans within back-up plans. That was so cool. Every time you thought he was screwed, he somehow weaseled his way out of it.

I really liked Brendan's friendship with Brain who was, basically, his only friend and willing to help him with his mad plans. That was cool. The strangest thing though was his relationship with both Tugger and The Pin. Tug beat him up and went all in his face, yet when Brendan collapsed, he took him to his house and tucked him into a bed, even sat with him till Brendan woke up. And The Pin. I felt that Brendan was the only person he could actually talk to. Really strange yet compelling.

To sum it up: No wonder it received the Special Jury Prize for Originality of Vision at the Sundance Festival in 2005. It really is quite original. I'm now looking forward to Looper, another movie that Rian Johnson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt worked on together, even more!

And there's an audio commentary with Rian Johnson on the DVD too! But not for today, it's getting late here *yawn*
