"[It's about the relationship] and how it develops and how it changes and the things that wind each other up, the things that they genuinely sort of love about each other as well. It's the gayest story in the history of television... People certainly run with that which I'm quite happy with! But we all saw it as a love story. Not just a love story, but those two people who do love each other - a slightly dysfunctional relationship sometimes, but a relationship that works. They get results." Link.
Oh, Martin! How I love you! Seriously, I just adore how open he is to the gay interpretation of Sherlock and John's relationship. Many actors would be all... squirmy about that, fearing they might get branded with the "gay stigma" but he's just... perfect!
I don't know if it's just me or do European actors really seem more open to playing gays without being afraid of catching the "gay cooties" than Americans? I mean, look at XMFC and James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, they adored playing the relationship between Charles and Erik like a love story, they never, ever said it wasn't so. With actors in American blockbusters, they always make sure it's perfectly clear that, no, the characters were NOT gay! Are American actors really that afraid of losing the image of their "masculinity"? You know, Europe may be called the "Old Continent" but in so many ways we are far more progressive than America.
