A little talk about books (what else? :P)
Jun. 19th, 2006 10:49 pmYesterday, I finished reading Sergei Lukyanenko's "Night Watch". It was really good. As I said to my friend, it reminded me of Yami no Matsuei. The Night Watch is actually an office in Moskau. The boss is grumpy most of the time, the office workers complain about their low income etc. And though everything looks like in any other company/office out there, the employees are magicians, werewolves etc. And there, in the middle of all this is Anton, an excellent computer programmer but a very inexperienced field agent. And as he finds out, a very expendable agent. His life is the first one his boss is willing to sacrifice to get what he wants. But Anton always somehow manages to pull through. But with every experience of this sort, his life becomes sadder and hollower.
This book consists of three chapters. In the first one, Anton has to save the cursed witch Svetlana and Jegor, a boy chased by a vampire. In the second one, Anton is the one being chased because he was unjustly accused of the murder of a Dark One. And in the third story, Anton tries to stop his lover Svetlana from being misused by the forces of Light (the Light Ones are not always the good ones too).
It is a very good book. But it gives you the feeling that there could be many more stories, so I'm really looking forward to reading the other books in the trilogy!
But at the moment, I'm reading Rachel Caine's "Ill Wind", the first book in the Weather Warden series. It tells the story of Joanne, a Weather Warden, who is running for her life because she was forced to kill her boss in self-defense. But since she did it using her magical power and there is a demon imprint on her body now, nobody would believe her.
The book started rather slow, but now, it's getting faster and faster. Especially from the moment she encountered David, a rather... unusual... hitchhiker ;) Interesting!
