There was only one likable character in the whole book, Vendevorex. So naturally, he was the one to die at the end. You see, the dragons were naturally presented as the bad guys, every one of them but Vendevorex and Shandrazel. But the humans, the slaves for whom I as a reader should've rooted for, weren't likable either, especially Jandra and Bant - I felt like strangling both of them for their selfish stupidity.
But all that I could've dealt with, maybe, if it wasn't for the twist that turned the book from a fantasy into a futuristic sci-fi, a thing completely unnecessary. I hate it when authors mix fantasy and sci-fi. The result is usually a big mess. This could've been a passable fantasy or a good sci-fi. As it was, it was neither.
Obviously, I won't be reading book #2.
