yami_tai had to work last night and we couldn't chat. And so I used the time to start the sequel to Due South. Yup, I finally began. This is just a teeny weeny little bit of the one-shot that describes Trowa and his background a bit. And nope, he won't meet Quatre in this one yet either -_-;; I won't post this story to MLs nor archives before it's done and finished.

The Blooming Rose
by KatiKat
Trowa walked down the street of the City, the oil lamps lighting his way. At this late hour, one would expect the town to be almost empty, but it was just the opposite. The streets and alleys were teeming with life. Men dressed in fancy clothes afoot, in carriages or litters... Luxurious brothels welcoming their regular guests and the new ones eagerly. Buildings painted all the colors of the rainbow, decorated with small red lanterns hanging on both sides of the main door guarded by muscled, scantily clad bouncers... This was the Red Lantern Quarter of the City...
The healer always felt self-conscious and terribly out of place there. In his simple clothes of earthy colors, he looked like a thief looking for prey to rid them of their pouches bulging with coins. But all these thoughts stayed buried in his mind and outwardly he showed only unswerving confidence. For he was there for a reason.
There, just a little way down the street. The luxurious building inlaid with white marble, the name painted with gold letters about the entrance. The Blooming Rose. His heart started to race and he swallowed painfully. In the folds of his dark cloak, he balled his hands into fists. In a couple of moments, he would see him again... after two years...
He told his friends - Duo, Heero, Treize and Mil - that he needed to pay a visit to someone. Someone... Although he knew that they would understand if he told them the truth, that they would support him and keep his, no their secret, he just couldn't make himself tell them. How could you tell your friends that the person that means the most to you in the world works as a prostitute? Well paid and admired prostitute, but still.. a hooker? Sentenced to a life of degradation and servitude?
Trowa stopped at the stairs leading to the main entrance of The Blooming Rose. He took a deep breath and climbed the three steps quickly.
The door was open for the night, only a heavy white velvet curtain embroided with gold roses covering the entryway. He pushed it aside and stepped into the dimly lit hall. Dark red candles in golden holders were the only source of light. But even in this half-light one had no problem identifying the paintings on the dark red walls... men, naked men in intimate positions... making love or having sex, it was the visitor's choice. There was no furniture in the square room, just more curtain covered doorways. Trowa could hear faint voices and laughter mingled with music. The pungent odor of some expensive drug hung in the air.
His eyes barely managed to adjust to the dim surroundings when a tall and sturdy man appeared. His skin was dark and oiled so generously that it looked like highly polished ebony. He was bald with big black sparkling eyes in his broad face. He was dressed in white leather trousers, knee high boots and a white leather vest. His neck and ears were decorated with gold.
"Tanith?" Trowa addressed the mountain of a man and smiled slightly at the other's confused expression. "You don't know me anymore?"
The black man blinked, then his dour expression vanished, replaced by a huge smile, all white teeth. "Trowa? Master Trowa, is that you?" Tanith crossed the hall in three strides and caught the smaller, slender man in his powerful arms. Trowa repaid the hug as best as he could as his feet dangled a foot or two above the floor.
"Yes, it's me, my friend," Trowa answered when the bouncer finally set him back down, still grinning.
Tanith clapped the healer on the back enthusiastically. "You are finally back. We almost thought that some wild animal devoured you on one of your journeys."
Trowa laughed. He always liked Tanith. Especially since he protected.... him... so well.
"He will be glad to see you again," Tanith said then.
The healer sobered. "Is he alone or..." He couldn't finish, his voice anxious. Even after so many years, it was hard for him to accept the facts.
The black man grew serious too. "Yes, he is alone. He has an... appointment tonight, though." He sighed. "A lot of things changed while you were gone, Master Trowa. And not all of them for the better," Tanith added cryptically.
Trowa's heart clenched painfully. What more could happen to him? What else did the gods lay on his shoulders? "Can I see him?"
Tanith nodded slowly. "Yes, he is preparing himself in his room. The carriage will be soon here though. You have just a couple of minutes." He headed for one of the curtained doorways.
Trowa followed him. "A carriage? I thought the men didn't take any outdoor appointments."
"As I said, things changed," Tanith answered while they climbed the spiral stairway.
Hurrying to catch up, Trowa frowned, his mind swirling with dark thoughts.
The stairs led to a long corridor, lit by candles. The walls were dark red, the thick carpet creamy white. The corridor was lined with heavy wooden black doors with golden numbers painted on them.
Number 3, that was the room he visited the last time and the time before. But today they walked past the door and headed further down the corridor to the unmarked door at the far end, facing the stairway. He held his tongue and swallowed all his questions.
Tanith stopped in front of the unmarked door and knocked.
"Yes?" sounded the faint voice from the inside.
Trowa's heart started to beat even faster. Finally...
Tanith opened the door and stepped aside, letting the healer step into the room. Then he closed the door again, leaving Trowa and the other man alone.
The chamber was as luxurious as the rest of the brothel. But here the walls were painted white and there were actual windows set into the walls opening a view of a garden lit by torches and teeming with prostitutes and their clients. The polished hardwood floor was covered with a thick white carpet and there were plants, bookcases, a table, a couch and two armchairs, cushioned with white velvet. And a bed... King-sized bed with a canopy and fluffy pillows.
Then a person stepped out of one of the two curtained doorways in the room, breaking Trowa's scrutiny of his surroundings. Trowa turned to the man and...
It was like if he looked in a mirror. Tall, slender, with green eyes and brown hair. But where Trowa was hard, sun tanned with his hair cut short, the other was soft, pale and with chin long hair, cut longer at the front. Where Trowa had simple, dark clothes on, the other was dressed in wide white trousers and a luxurious silk robe with a high collar and embroidered with gold roses. It hugged his curves and reached to his mid-thigh. He had thin slippers on that weren't designed for a long walk outside.
Trowa swallowed painfully, his eyes stinging. "Triton," he whispered.
Some deep emotion flashed through the man's eyes, before it disappered again. "Brother," answered the other quietly. "Welcome back."
