1942, Somewhere in the Sahara Desert
"Rick, we have to stop them!" Evelyn O'Connell cried out, tearing at the manacles that bound her and her husband to the foot of the mighty sandstone pillar, decorated with ancient carvings. Her voice bounced off the thick walls of the temple, but was quickly drowned out by the ceaseless chanting of the rows of kneeling black clad men.
Rick pulled at the chain that constrained him until the muscles in his powerful arms stood out like ropes, but the thick links held. He screamed in frustration, yanking at the shackles until trickles of blood started to run down his hands from where he tore his skin at his wrists. He hit the pillar with the flat of his palms once, twice in an impotent rage, then he finally slumped to the sand covered ground next to his wife.
They ran away from Europe, from the war and the danger. They should have been safe here, in Africa. The undead mummies were gone, all the evil ghosts banished to the realm of the deaths. He, Evie and Alex should have been safe here... Even Ardeth promised that they would be... and now this...
Rick scanned the rows and rows of black clad Medjai, who had their heads lowered and were chanting softly facing the altar on the opposite side of the vast room. Then he met the eyes of the creature standing by the altar, watching him with a mocking smile on his full lips. Long black hair, sun tanned face, dark tattoos of the Medjai, black cloak, revealing a muscled chest adorned with more swirls of the intricate tattoos. O'Connell clenched his hands in fists so tight that his knuckles went white.
Fucking smirking bastard! Not looking away, he spat on the ground in disgust. The creature's smirk grew more pronounced. Feisal the Dark, they called him, Tutankhamun's personal guard who sealed a pact with the black magic to take revenge on the ones who killed his beloved Master and Pharaoh... He died young but took all of the guilty ones with him. And now he was back, his soul returning from the afterlife...
The chanting grew louder and the dull thumping of a drum reached them from the corridor. Evie and Rick both jumped to their feet, their hearts racing. They knew what was coming. And indeed, the small column of black clad Medjai appeared in the doorway next to which their pillar stood. Three pairs of warriors passed by, not giving them one glance. And then...
Ardeth. He stopped in the doorway for a moment, the only man besides Rick who looked the dark creature directly in the eyes. Rick watched as his friend clenched his teeth, the muscle jumping in his jaw. O'Connell felt angry, no, enraged at the Medjai for pulling them into their problems once again since they had nothing to do with the awakening of this particular monster. But he couldn't be angry at Ardeth... not at him since the warrior was in the same situation as they were...
Rick flicked a gaze at the demon by the altar, the creature's dark features illuminated by the light of dozens of torches. Gasim... Ardeth's son... possessed by the Evil itself... Unimaginable...
But then Ardeth took a deep breath and started to walk down the aisle, breaking the moment of serene calm that settled over O'Connell for a second. Rick knew what would come next so he braced himself, nonetheless a shocked gasp escaped him.
Only dimly he registered Evie crying out in rage and panic, for his whole mind focused on the young man the black clad guards were leading by his arms between them. Alex...
They washed his sun bleached hair and oiled his tanned skin until it gleamed and shimmered in the torch light. He was bare footed and they dressed him only in a simple white gown. But it was the expression on his face that Rick couldn't look away from. Alex had his glassy eyes half closed, lips parted and his cheeks were slightly flushed. His head was lolling slightly to the side as if he was drunk and if the men didn't pull him forward he wouldn't have taken one step on his own.
"Alex!" Evie shouted, jerking on the chain to get to her son. "Alex, look at me! Alex!"
"Alex!" Rick joined his wife, trying to get his son's attention. But to no avail.
The guards passed by, dragging the oblivious youth with them to the altar. Like a speck of light in the dark Alex's white clad figure moved dreamily between the rows of the Medjai, then up the sandstone steps to the altar where the guards passed him over to the waiting creature.
By now the O'Connells stopped fighting their bonds, wanting to at least bear witness to what would happen when they couldn't help. Evie leaned into her husband, clutching his arm and breathed heavily, fighting the tears that gathered in her eyes. Rick went rock solid, impotent fury burning in his chest. Their friend Ardeth who knelt down by the foot of the stairs leading to the altar raised his head too, facing the same terrible decision to not leave his son in the clutches of Feisal alone.
Feisal ran his hands up and down the arms of the gently swaying young man, then he touched Alex's chin with his right one and lifted the blond head to meet the half closed eyes. He ran his thumb over Alex's lower lip, gazing enrapt into the blue eyes that blinked open slowly and sluggishly. When they finally focused, a dreamy smile appeared on Alex's face and he leaned his cheek into the creature's hand.
>>"Feisal..."<< Alex whispered, his voice full of strange happiness.
The dark man smiled openly. >>"Tutankhamun..."<<
Their voices echoed through the vast room in the sudden silence that settled over the temple when the drum ceased to thump and the Medjai stopped their grim chanting.
>>"I've waited so long..."<< Feisal whispered.
Alex leaned closer as if pulled by a strong, unseen power. Feisal released his shoulder and his chin and reached for the golden clasp that held Alex's white garb and opened it. The light fabric shimmered to the floor, revealing the young man's naked figure. His well oiled tanned skin glowed in the firelight. The creature devoured the sight with his hungry black eyes.
Evie looked away. Rick clenched his jaw and fists tightly. Ardeth mirrored his gesture.
And Feisal took Alex's face in his hands once again, drawing small circles on the clean shaven cheeks with his thumbs and leaning closer he covered the full lips with his own, kissing his long lost Master and Pharaoh passionately, drinking from his mouth like a man dying from thirst.
Tutankhamun...
Master...
Pharaoh...
Lover...

Oh, and I found two versions of his name Tutankhamen and Tutankhamun which I like better :)
