Arthur & Eames, Inception (GIF by -andrews)
You remember the old movies about school children? With the prim girl always in her best clothes and the rascal who loved to pull her pigtails? That's pretty much Arthur and Eames in a nutshell.
I know that Inception was about Cobb and his issues, that we should've felt sorry for him because of his sob story with Mal and whatnot. Not me. Cobb and Mal annoyed me to no end. He had driven his wife crazy and then couldn't man up and face the music, instead he kept endangering his team mates. I wanted to slap him silly. Yusuf and Saito were great, both in their own way. And Ariadne was whip smart, didn't let Cobb walk all over her and called him on his BS. I liked that. But it was Arthur and Eames who made this movie FUN!
I found a vid on YouTube that consists of all the scenes Arthur and Eames had together or in which they talked about each other to someone else, the vid is JUST 2 minutes long: link. But in these two minutes, you get the perfect idea of what their relationship is like. It's amazing what the writers managed to squeeze in. And watching this vid, it made me regret that they didn't have more time on-screen together. The movie would've been even better for that.
Not that their individual scenes weren't amazing! My favorite part of the movie was Arthur's dream level, him fighting the security in the rolling corridor, figuring out how to give them a kick in zero gravity... And Eames in the snow, fighting more of the security guys in the tower. How awesome was that? Best parts of the movie, hands down!
I admit that it took me quite a while to get into this pairing because you have to have a lot of imagination to accept the slash potential there. But once you do, you have a whole new world to explore. Because Arthur and Eames' relationship really IS quite fascinating. Eames calls Arthur a "stick in the mud" with no imagination - on the other hand he admits that Arthur is the best at what he does. Arthur, on the other hand, doesn't think much of Eames' "imagination" or his lack of proper, efficient planning - yet he can't help but be impressed by him at the same time. And Eames just loves to make fun of Arthur, poke and prod him and generally make his life a bit more
But they seem to genuinely like each other despite all of that. You can see it in that scene in the hotel room, in which Eames warns Arthur that the security will give him a hard time and Arthur tells him to just go to sleep, that he knows what he's doing. The smile they give each other is so warm and genuine. And I think it's all down to the actors, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy. They seemed to have so much fun together, making this movie. And Tom Hardy's accent... When he calls Arthur "darling"... *swoons*
So, yeah, slashy or not, it doesn't really matter. For me, they were the most interesting part of the movie and their relationship was the best drawn and most fun, even though it was only touched upon.
