Watched Fast Five with the audio commentary by Justin Lin. I really hope he will be back as the director for FF6. He loves this franchise, the characters, the actors, the crew... everything. You can hear it in his voice when he talks about them (it's like with Matthew Vaughn and XMFC). He had so many great things to say about all of them.
-- The train scene? They had to actually buy a train and a piece of live tracks to shoot it. The whole thing cost 25 mil.! And the studio kept calling him, telling him that he couldn't ram the train with a truck because it was too costly! And he told his crew, fuck it, just do it. And it was amazing!
-- He also acknowledged the utter ridiculousness of the movie, its over-the-topness, but they all decided to just embrace it, run with it and do as many stunts practically as possible. He also said that if someone watched FF5 as a documentary on how to steal a safe, they deserved to be caught. LOL!
-- Then he talked about the cast and crew on the set, that one thing he didn't tolerate was selfishness but that everybody meshed perfectly. Also, they all had a good laugh when Elsa Pataky's husband - Chris Hemsworth himself! - flew in to Porto Rico to be with her while she filmed - they were all so giddy that they had Thor walking around the set! LOL! And did you know that Dwayne Johnson's body double/stuntman is actually his cousin?
-- The cinematography is amazing! The takes in the favelas, all the air shots where they risked being shot down by the gangs. And still, they got amazing footage. Beautiful.
-- And the chase in the favelas? It was planned for a week and a half but because money got scarce, they filmed it in two and a half days! He just gathered the cast and crew, told them what the situation was and suggested they film it as the biggest independent movie ever! So they shot with three crews in three places barely 150 feet apart at the very same time to get it all done. Jordana Brewster cut her hands open on a barbed wire fence but she made them just patch her up and go on because a trip to the hospital would delay the shooting and cost money.
-- And then he talked about Dom and Brian, how Brian was like Dom's little brother, always trying to best him. Lovely.
-- And the crews! He talked about how the actors split up into two groups that became really tight - Dom's vs. Hobbs' - and it was really felt in their dynamic, that they knew each other and were comfortable with each other. Awesome!
Man, I love this movie so much. Yeah, the slash is gone but I don't mind. Mia became totally awesome here and they are all a family now and it's fantastic. And the music! The "action" song, That's How We Roll, kicks major ass. Rap isn't really my cuppa but it fits the movie perfectly. Even when the credits roll, the song keeps your blood pumping. I also loved the character sketches at the end, all the characters throughout the five movies. Awesome.
Can't wait for FF6 next year!
