You know, lately, I've found out that there are quite a lot of gay movies that don't immediately give you a week-long depression with their portrayal of homophobic attitude that society have towards gays. There actually are mystery stories, comedies and other movies that focus on gay characters without being preachy. And one of the movies is "Third Man Out".

This movie is based on the book "Third Man Out: A Donald Strachey Mystery" by Richard Stevenson. It features Chad Allen as Donald Strachey and Sebastian Spence as his lover Tim Callahan (he is so cute with his glasses on!).

In this movie, the private detective Donald Strachey is hired by John Rutka, a gay man who is exposing closeted gays. Someone is trying to kill Rutka and it's up to Donald to find out who it is. I didn't read the book but even Stevenson's fans say that the film is much better because the writers left out the preachy subplot and changed some aspects of the characters (for example Timmy is not a former Peace-Corps member but he was studying to become a priest and decided against it because of the church's attitude towards gay marriage).

The film is funny in places, there is some violence, some nude fronts but the gay sex scenes are only hinted at. The whole movie is based on characters and let me tell you that Chad Allen and Sebastian Spence make a cute couple.

If you are interested in buying this movie, it's out on DVD here. It's a here! production, so go and buy and make them film more stuff like that!
