It was brought to my attention that I spoiled someone by talking about the finale of ST:E and that made me think of what I personally consider a spoiler and what not. Let's see...

Movies:
- Everything unaired is a spoiler.
- Everything aired and not on DVD is a spoiler.
- Movie out on DVD is a free game.

TV series:
- Everything unaired is a spoiler.
- Episode-specific stuff - MOTW etc. - is a spoiler until the next episode airs.
- Major character-specific stuff - deaths, leaving the show etc. - is a spoiler until the season is out on DVD.
- Seasons out on DVD are a free game.
- Old shows out on DVD are a free game.

I know that some people on my flist would disagree but that's how I see it. In my opinion, there has to be an expiration period for spoilers otherwise you wouldn't be able to talk about anything show/movie related outside a cut. You wouldn't be able to mention anything from John Winchester's death to Jack O'Neill leaving SG-1.

If you don't agree, folks, and you want to leave my flist for fear of being spoiled, I respect that and we will part ways on friendly terms, no hard feelings. I understand that sometimes opinions differ to the point of spoiling fun. So this is your "get out of jail free" card :)

I'm going to have to agree with you. I've never seen the series finale of ST:E so I didn't know Trip dies, but that series has been over and on DVD and in re-runs like forever! so it never even occurred to me to consider that tidbit a 'spoiler'. That would really be stretching it.

you always put spoilers under lj cut with warning and anybody who clicks and then brags should be ignored :) *cheers*

People can be insane on the subject of spoilers. No, sorry, Harry Potter finale is not a bloody spoiler anymore, no matter how slow you read.

In other words: word.

I mean, I understand that people can't see every one show on TV, but when they are over and in re-run and on DVD for years now... I don't know, it just feels like it's not a spoiler anymore.

It was mostly about spoilers for old and cancelled shows. The question was if, for example, a big spoiler for The Professionals was still considered a spoiler even twenty years later. I don't think so...

I think so too. I mean, I can understand being spoilerphobic for shows that are currently on but for old stuff? It's just too much, I think.

Thank you. I mean, when someone tells me that they are watching, I don't know, Angel at the moment, I won't be going out of my way to tell them how it ends, but I don't see any reason to not discuss this show openly in my own LJ since it's been done and over for five years now.

It is sort of "I am your father" thing everybody knows about it. Argh I do not understand people who are crazy when so called spoilers are mentioned * shakes her head*

You are always going to get people who are touchy about spoilers so I cut everything personally, but you are right that you should be able to talk freely about shows that are long over in your own LJ.
