I finally caught up on Merlin. It's a cute show but it will probably never be a favorite of mine, something that I'm in love with. The days when I was obsessed with Hercules, Xena, Wilhelm Tell, Robin Hood or Roar are obviously gone...

What I love about the show:
* the storylines - they are quite intriguing and a lot stuff usually happens in the course of one ep
* the outdoors - yes, they really do film most of the scenes out there, in the wide, wide world XP
* Anthony Head - I was never into him on Buffy but as Uther, he's really great
* the friendship between Arthur and Merlin - they are quite cute together, aren't they? ;)

But to be honest, I don't see the slash in this show. Maybe it's because it feels like there's this... distance between Arthur and Merlin. Sure, they are kinda sorta friends but Arthur is the crown prince and Merlin is just his manservant and I do feel this distance. To me it feels like... they lack chemistry *ducks flying dishes* I can see them as very close friends but I feel no intimacy in their relationship *shrugs*

Heh. This is interesting to me because lately I've asked myself if anybody even bothers to pretend anymore that Merlin is just a mere servant of Arthur's. So many reactions and dialogue seem to laugh at that and pimp them as more. :)

I just feel like... I can't really connect them. We have yet to see them have a real conversation that's longer than three or four lines. I just... it's really hard to explain. I feel like their relationship is too... superficial, shallow. I know that they are ready to die for each other but I see that as them being good men and not because they have something... deeper.

I think that it's the "either you see it or you don't" case XP

Probably. *g* To me it's like a giant, purple dragon flying across the sky.

I really enjoy Merlin. It isn't an obsession kind of show for me, just one that I enjoy watching. It's all kinds of cute.

I've never been a slasher, so it always really bemuses me when so many people seem to go into any given show deliberately looking for characters to slash. *shrugs* To me, the characters and their various relationships just are what they are. And so 'tis with Arthur and Merlin. They have this odd dynamic where they are good friends, but can't ever forget that they are also prince and servant, and that's what creates the distance. It's all about social status and class.

Although it feels weird saying that when one of the things I always giggle at in the show is the relative absence of class boundaries as they should be in a feudal society!

I love slash - but only where I can really see it, like when two male characters are really close and there is the possibility. I don't like it when fanfic authors push something forcefully when it's obviously not there. But as I said, it's a case of "either you see it or you don't" XP
