Stargate Universe
Sep. 14th, 2008 01:37 pmFrom GateWorld's Five Ways To Make SGU Awesome article:
1. MAKE IT SPACESHIP-BASED. "Stargate Universe will go not just to a new galaxy but to many new galaxies, increasing the story ideas exponentially." Right, basically they need other galaxies because they are running out of ideas.
2. REACH A NEW AUDIENCE. "Hold-over viewers from the first two series, loyal as we are, will simply continue to age and lose interest." Way to go, TPTB. Now you insulted all the viewers of SG-1 and SGA.
3. WRITE MORE CHARACTER DRAMA. "Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis fit squarely in the "action-adventure" style of show. This has made for great fun, but it often comes at the expense of dramatic moments between the characters." True, but they do realize that action episodes like Be All My Sins Remembered or The Daedalus Variations usually have the highest ratings, right? People watch it because it's action-adventure! That's what makes it different and so much fun!
4. CREATE BAD GUYS WITH PERSONALITY. "The Wraith, on the other hand, have struggled as an entertaining villain because -- before characters like Michael and Todd -- they were not personalized." I very much preferred them scary and mysterious, thank you very much.
5. TAKE RISKS. "If the show's producers are willing to go outside the familiar and well-worn path of what Stargate looks and feels like, they'll have a winner on their hands." Uh, sorry, but I don't think so. Change the franchise too much and you'll lose faithful viewers because the new product will be too different and you still won't reach new viewers because the new product won't be different enough - Star Trek's Enterprise anyone?
This article screams too much of a desperate "please, please, please, give us a chance". I think that they didn't count on a) SGA's cancellation and b) badly chosen words alienating fans so much. Are they really that dumb or are they trying to sabotage the new project on purpose?

Date: 2008-09-14 03:18 pm (UTC)Actually, for me Nr. 3 and 4 seem horrible.
* Bad guys with a personality? The Wraith were awesome when they were still creepy and mysterious, once they got a face and we learned them personally, they stopped being a threat. Just like with the Goa'uld, just another snake head.
* And more character drama? Ugh. As David Hewlett said, you can't have The Shrine every week because people would get bored. I love Stargate, because it kicks major ass, as Joe Flanigan said, it's the last real action show. I hate it that these days, the shows have to be carbon copies of one another. I do not want anything even remotely similar to BSG and BSG is exactly the thing that TPTB name as an example for what they would like the show to be more like.
As I said, they are insinuating and insisting on how different SGU will be than SGA and SG-1 and I'm one of those who is not happy about that. They are basically reinventing the basics of the franchise รก la Enterprise and I'm still not sure if that's a good thing. And by their desperate attempts to make people like the idea, they are obviously not on a solid ground themselves.
