Soaking a washcloth in a bowl of cold water, Sam wrung it out then ran it down Dean's flushed cheek. The fever that was draining Dean's body vaporized the moisture in seconds, leaving the skin paper dry once more.

He was growing desperate and John was gone. How surprising.

Parting his cracked lips and gripping Sam's hand with surprising strength, Dean croaked: "Promise me…"

"What, Dean?" Sam asked softly, touching the cloth to Dean's forehead.

"Promise… you won't leave…"

The tightly folded letter from Stanford heavy in his back pocket, Sam met his brother’s desolate look and lied: "I promise."

When I read pre-series fics, it really makes me sad that no matter how happy the boys are in the stories, you know that it'll end with Sam off to Stanford and Dean all alone :(
