katikatI decided to cut all my impressions of this episode because from what I encountered on the net, the opinions of this ep differ very much. Some people say that this ep bored them to tears, others are completely smitten with it. Well, count me into the second camp. This episode was amazing!
Highlights?
--> I loved that the boys where there for the whole episode. I know that it was about the angel/ghost stuff but it was very personal too. It told the story of Sam and Dean, of their faith. It was about them and not so much about the case or monster-of-the-week. This episode was character driven, not plot or action driven so the action-focused people could get bored, I guess. But I loved the dialogs, the explanations that told us where their faith or atheism comes from. Very well done, as all the episode directed by Kim Manners are.
--> The new stuff that we found out about the boys. Sam prays every night? And their mother used to tell Dean that there were angels watching over them? I think that's rather cool. I watch this show for the characters, not so much for the scary stories. And it's these bits and pieces that make me rather happy.
--> The funny bits. Unicorns. Dean's obsession with "magic fingers". The Christmas decorations comment. Not really hilarious, but really light-hearted.
--> The dialog at the very end; Sam losing faith and Dean restoring it. It was very touching. When Sam admitted that they were really completely alone in what they were doing. Before, they had their Dad and the other hunters and they could turn to the authorities if necessary. But now they can depend only on each other. No wonder Sam hoped that there was some divine force that watched over them.
--> And the music of course. Knockin' on Heaven's Door was an excellent choice. For the episode and for the scene.
This was a rather quiet episode, one that you have to watch a couple of times to really "get" it, to get into the mood. You have to actually listen what they talk about and not run around doing a million things at once, just catching a glimpse of the action now and then. This one goes really deep and I will treasure it. Amazing!
