"Smoke and Mirrors" is the second book in Tanya Huff's series about Tony Foster, the ex-sidekick of Henry Fitzroy, the gay vampire and hero of her Blood series. I haven't read the Blood series but this one really kicks ass. And the second book is even better than the first. A real page-turner. I couldn't read fast enough to find out what would happen next.

So, Tony Foster, a fledgling wizard and PA of the TV production "Darkest Night", gets himself locked up in a haunted house together with the set crew, a couple of ghosts, a homicidal evil "thing in the basement" and the man he is totally in love/lust with. The whole book takes place during one night that the crewmen have to survive in the house that is after their lives. And of course, Tony has to save the day (or better said night).

I love the characters, I love the story, I love the humor. Tanya Huff does excellent job painting the main heroes, especially Tony and Lee and their kind of awkward relationship. Is Lee straight or not? Will there be any relationship between them or not? Is Det. Ellson interested only in the weird stuff that seems to center around Tony or in Tony himself? Is there something going on between Henry, the vampire, gay and a sorta private eye, and CB, TPTB of the "CB Production" and a bull of a man? So many gay-related questions that you fairly itch to read the next book (though I will wait for the paperback; the hardcover is way too expensive).

Tony reflects many times on the time when he was still Henry's lover and solved cases with him that mostly involved ghosts, murdering wizards etc. etc. This makes the innocent reader want to read the Blood series too! Argh. I think, I will have to order it. My poor bank account!

So, all in all, this book is way better than the first. Action, suspense, horror and humor and teeny weeny bit of romance. The perfect mix. Definitely five stars out of five!
