As I mentioned yesterday, I bought the first two episodes of the 1979 Russian TV series Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson on DVD. And I think I like this version even better than Jeremy Brett's. It follows Doyle's stories but not slavishly, it adds a bit here and there to make it interesting even for people who know the plots.

Meet Holmes and Watson:

The first episode is mostly about how they meet and start living together. The twist? At first, Watson doesn't know that Holmes is a consulting detective, he thinks Holmes is actually a criminal mastermind! A pretty funny misunderstanding. And the first case they solve together? The Speckled Band.

Also, the relationship between them, it's... gentler. Watson is more reserved and Holmes more open, less aloof than usually. Holmes doesn't mock Watson when he gets something wrong, he tries to teach Watson how to sharpen his deductive skills. Also, Watson is younger than Holmes in this version, so in this version, their relationship reminds you of of the big brother/little brother dynamic, Holmes watches over Watson. An interesting twist. See?

It's actually really sweet :)
