I'm not bitter. Right.
Aug. 22nd, 2008 08:55 amFrom GateWorld.net's article about the cancellation of SGA: "Rather than canceling the show because of under-performance, the Powers That Be decided to go out on top while Atlantis is still popular enough to support the release of DVD movies." Oh right, let's cancel the show that's rising in ratings once more...
They are so full of crap. And no, of course they didn't cancel SGA to make room for Stargate Universe! So this follow-up article is just a coincidence: Sci-fi green-lights Stargate Universe. Uh-huh. Yeah, they decided to cancel SGA for the "good" of the series, not because they couldn't wait to start their new pet project.
From the article: "The producers are reportedly looking to cast a known actor for one of the leading roles, and fresh faces to round out the cast. This would follow the pattern of SG-1, which earned a lot of marketability from leading man Richard Dean Anderson when it premiered in 1997, rather than the largely unknown cast of Atlantis. The new series will also be aimed at a slightly younger audience, SCI FI president Dave Howe said."
So, they need a star to push the show because they are not all that certain that it can stand on the stories alone like SGA did. And the "slightly younger audience" makes me roll my eyes. So, Sci-fi now goes The CW? What I always loved about the Stargate universe was that they used mature actors that had the proper age for the role they were playing. Now we will get a "teenagers in space" sort of series?
I'm trying not to be bitter. SGU might turn out to be a great show and I will give it a chance - I adore sci-fi - but I'm still hurt. If they canceled SGA because it did bad, I wouldn't have liked it but I would have understood that. But I just can't get over the fact that they canceled it despite it doing well to make room and get the money for another show. And words like "An Atlantis movie will also air later in 2009 on Sci-fi - hopefully the first of many." feel too much like they want to simply placate aggravated fans. I want to believe it, I really do, I want to believe that they will give us more than one movie with the SGA team intact... But I don't, not anymore.
