Expectations

by KatiKat

"Tenma..."

"No!" the red-haired young man shouted, pulling away from his friend. "No, Yorihisa. This is bullshit! A piece of crap! Nonsense!"

The blue-haired man sighed. "Tenma, please, let me explain-"

"There is nothing to explain! I won't listen to you! Go back to where you came from and leave us alone!"

Yorihisa caught the red-head by the arm to stop him from leaving. "Ten-"

"I said NO!" Tenma yelled, and tearing his arm out of the other man's grasp, he pushed his friend away hard.

Maybe too hard, for Yorihisa didn't expect his move and unsteady as he was on his feet, he staggered and fell against the entrance door of Tenma's house. He slid down the painted wood and landed on the ground with a loud thud.

When Yorihisa gasped loudly, Tenma was immediately by his side. "Yorihisa, are you okay? I didn't hurt you, did I?" he asked anxiously. He might not believe his friend's story but he would never hurt him intentionaly.

Yorihisa shook his head, his long hair hiding the expression of his face. Tenma breathed out loud and flopped on the hardwood floor next to the other man. He crossed his legs, propped his elbows on his knees and hid his face in his hands.

Damn it all! The minute he opened the door and found a pale-faced Yorihisa standing on the threshold, he knew that something must have happened. The bodyguard would not travel to another world on a whim. But he had never expected this. He barked out a laugh. Expected... what a pun.

"You are not making this up, are you?" he said quietly.

Now it was time for Yorihisa to laugh bitterly. "Do you think I would make up something like that?"

Tenma sighed. "No, probably not." Lifting his head from his hands, he looked at the blue-haired man who now leaned against the door, eyes closed. "How is it possible? How did it happen?"

Yorihisa waved his hand. "It must've been the sigils, there is no other explanation. Takamichi found a note in one of the scrolls-"

The red-head's eyes darkened with anger again. "He knew this would happen?"

The bodyguard shook his head. "No. Actually, not exactly. As I said, he found an old scroll that described certain expectations as a side effect of the calling up the sigils. I think he never thought of this." He smiled crookedly and lay his hand on his stomach.

Tenma's eyes slid to Yorihisa's belly. Pregnant. This man was pregnant. With his child. He would be father soon.

Suddenly, as if his brain finally caught up with him, his throat closed painfully and he couldn't catch his breath. Oh god! But before the panic could set in properly, he looked at the other man, looked properly and realized that no matter how hard it was for him, for Yorihisa it was worse, far worse...

The blue-haired man's complexion was ghostly white and there were dark circles under his shadowed eyes. Nothing before had ever affected him so deeply physically. He was fighting his condition, keeping his wits together and savoring strength. And the last thing he needed was to sit here on the ground and argue.

Tenma scrambled to his feet and offered his friend a hand. "Come on, let's find a better place for this talk, okay?" he said with a smile and when the other man took his hand, he helped him carefully to his feet.

The red-head helped Yorihisa to the living room where he seated the bodyguard on the cushioned couch. Yorihisa didn't pay much attention to his surroundings which told Tenma everything about the depth of exhaustion his friend suffered.

"Would you like a glass of water or something?" Tenma asked and when Yorihisa shook his head, he sat down next to him.

Suddenly he felt shy and awkward. What should he talk about with the... father? mother? of his future child? And then...

His head shot up "Wait a minute! If you are with child then the others..."

Yorihisa nodded wearily.

"Who?"

This time, the blue-haired man snickered good-naturedly. "Takamichi. After overcoming the initial shock, Tomomasa now plays the proud expecting father while everyone - his underlings just as his superiors - are making fun of Takamichi. I think he didn't stopped blushing since he woke up from fainting after he heard the news."

Tenma raised his eyebrows. "He fainted?"

Yorihisa smiled. "Yes, and Tomomasa obviously can't stop teasing him about it. I heard that the last time Tomomasa called him 'frail flower' Takamichi threw a vase with gardenias after him."

The red-head laughed. He could vividly imagine it.

Then Yorihisa sobered. "With Eisen, it's different. He took his vows when he went to the monastery. He swore never to marry or have children so as not to endanger his brother's position on the throne. And now..." He shook his head. "The priests are giving him hard time. The Emperor stands behind him though. And Yasuaki too." He lowered his voice to whisper. "The priests wanted to force Eisen to get rid of the baby but Yasuaki stepped in and took the prince away from the monastery."

Tenma swallowed his pain over the horror Eisen must have gone through since they discovered his condition. "Yasuaki will be good to him."

The blue-haired man gave him a half smile. "And Kotengu too. Who would have thought that the little demon would be so protective of our prince." He chuckled and shook his head again.

Tenma smiled too. "And what about Inori?"

Yorihisa looked at red-haired young man. "Inori is not with a child," he answered.

Startled, Tenma blinked. "He is not? Then..." His eyes widened. "You mean... Shimon?"

The bodyguard nodded gravely. "We think so. If not Inori, then it's Shimon. The boy is pregnant, Tenma."

The red-head jumped to his feet. Until now, the whole thing was about "the others". But this one struck close to home. Shimon, sweet little Shimon... Shimon who was getting sicker and sicker since they returned back to their world. They thought it was just the stress of the past weeks, but now they knew the real cause.

He started pacing around, his arms moving in unison with his mouth. "We have to get him... you... all of us to a doctor. They will figure out how to help you. They will-"

"Tenma!"

Just a single word spoken in a quiet tone, but it made him stop in his tracks. He turned to his friend.

Yorihisa leaned forward resting his elbows on his knees. "I don't know who this 'doctor' is, but I'm sure he won't help us. That's what I came for. To bring Shimon and Akane back to Kyou." Tenma opened his mouth but Yorihisa raised his hand to silence him. "In the old scroll, Takamichi found that when this-" he pointed at his stomach "-happened the last time, everything went down just fine with the Priestess' power. We are not sure what she did or how she did it, but we have some time to figure it out."

"But-!"

The bodyguard interrupted his friend's frustrated voice once again. "Tenma, think about it. What would happen if you brought us to this doctor of yours? Would they be as accepting of us as the people in our world are?" His voice was soothing and reasonable.

Tenma sighed and dropped back on the couch. "Okay, okay. You are probably right. But we are speaking about Shimon here. About Eisen, Takamichi... you! What if we don't figure it out? What if we don't find a way for Akane to help you?" He slammed his fist on his tigh. "Hell, we don't even know HOW it came to that in the first place."

Yorihisa leaned his head back wearily and closed his eyes. "We think… Yasuaki thinks… it's the sigils' doing. It was he who discovered our… condition. The Emperor called him in to Eisen when the priests couldn’t figure out why the prince was getting sicker. They suspected that a demon or a ghost poisoned his health. But this-“ he laid a hand on his stomach again and chuckled “-surprised even our stone-faced sorcerer. He is convinced that the children are the manifestation of the mythical beasts the sigils present, their personalization, if you can say it so. Though we have no idea why it's me and not you who is carrying this baby." He rubbed his stomach gently.

Tenma shuddered at the prospect of carrying another living being, no matter how small in his body.

The blue-haired man continued. "Why Shimon and not Inori. Except for Shimon, we are all from Kyou." He shrugged. "Maybe it's all about the attitude of the person, about their acceptability of the inexplicable. The sigils chose the people who would certainly carry the child to term without abortion."

Tenma's mind was spinning. So many things to think about, to worry about, to do. But then, in a quiet voice he asked about the problem at hand. "So, you decided to keep the child?"

"Yes," Yorihisa answered without hesitation and his hand tightened on his stomach.

The red-haired young man sighed. Not that he expected - or if he was honest with himself wanted - a different answer. So, he was going to be a father. Fuck.

He jumped to his feet and headed for the door, a new determination in his step.

Yorihisa opened his eyes and turned around, too tired to get up if there was no need. "Where are you going?" he asked.

Tenma shot him a glare. "Where do you think? I need to get Akane and Shimon. Then we will return to Kyou and damn well find a resolution for our little... problems." He grabbed the doorknob and tore the door open. "And you stay here. Don't go anywhere. I have no idea how you got here in the first place but I bet it wasn't an easy walk. I have no intention to scrape you from the floor, got it?" When Yorihisa answered with a nod and tiny smile, Tenma nodded to himself. "I'll be back as soon as possible." Then he stepped out and slammed the door shut.

Dammit! Damn it to all the hells and back! He was going to be a father!
