Out of all Roland Emmerich's movies, The Day After Tomorrow and Independence Day are my favorites. His other movies? Eh. No interest whatsoever. Though I'm curious about White House Down. But that's more because of Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx than him.

But back to this movie. I like (post-)apocalyptic films but there must be characters I can root for, a strong family story. At the same time, it mustn't take your attention away from the action. It's not a soap opera, after all. And in this one, I just adore Jack's relationhship with his son, Sam. Sam's absolute trust in his father, his faith that Jack will come for him, no matter what.

But I also like the kids, the teenagers: Sam, Laura, Brian and JD. They stick together and don't do anything stupid! Which is not really common in American movies where teenagers often yell at their parents to let them live, give them space and and other nonsense. So, I really adore the teens in this one. Even the "rivalry" between Sam and JD wasn't played up, it was quickly over once JD realized that Sam was in love with Laura. And that was lovely!

And the actors! I adore Dennis Quaid. I have always loved his beautiful smile, he always lights up like a Xmas tree! I could do without Jake Gyllenhaal - he's an ass! - but I like his part here. And I recognized so many other actors: Perry King, Tamlyn Tomita, Adrian Lester, Ian Holm, Nestor Serrano, Sasha Roiz, Mimi Kuzyk, Sela Ward... Awesome! I love to play "Spot the actor!"
