And I VERY MUCH don't like it. Actually, I'm VERY annoyed. And before you start accusing me of sexism and misogyny - don't, just don't. This casting isn't about adding female characters, if it were, BOTH Holmes and Watson would be female. This is just levelling it up to the usual 2:1 male to female American TV ratio so that the female character can be paired up with two possible Male Specimen(TM) and at the same time getting rid of the "obnoxious ghey" vibes the sensitive American viewership would be traumatized with.
And before you start accusing me of racisms - again, don't. I've been a fan of Lucy Liu since her days on Ally McBeal where she played the best character of all. I even watched some horrible movies just because of her - some of them though, even she couldn't save, like Charlie's Angels.
And that's not all. Do you think Watson is a decorated war hero? Pshaw! She's a disgraced surgeon! It's Merlin all over again - why make Gwen a black princess/noblewoman when she can be a black servant (subsequently, all the POCs were servants or criminals)? Why make female!Watson a war hero when she can be a disgraced surgeon? We want to be radical, but not THAT radical. That could offend!
I will watch the pilot because I do like procedurals but a) this show will have to blow me away with its sparkling wit and intrigue and I'll watch it as an original show, not based on SH at all or b) it'll have to have another kink of mine, protective!girl, since they already killed the bromance.
And I have to say, I can't believe that some people think this casting is a step forward, a progress. Progress would be if they had made male Holmes and Watson an actual couple. Progress would be if they had made both Holmes and Watson female, or at least Holmes, the leading character, not his sidekick. So, no, it's not progress, it's just their effort to make the show heteronormative enough to introduce an UST the American audience could swallow (if you have any doubts, see Kara and Lee on BSG).
