Rec me your favorite...
Jul. 1st, 2010 05:57 pm... Big Bang fics? You know what pairings/genres I love - slash/gen, no death stories, pairings Sam/Dean, Dean/Castiel, Clark/Lex, Kirk/McCoy, Sheppard/McKay... - and I know that there have been new BB stories posted in various fandoms - am I right? But usually, there are many, many bad fics that you have to peruse to find the one true gem... So, any recs? Something I mustn't miss for anything in the world?

The Incestuous Courtship of the Antichrist's Bride (http://fleshflutter.livejournal.com/102268.html): Sam/Dean. Sam is trying to become the Antichrist in order to save the world. He has a small army of angels and demons, he has an adoring cult, he has a work of prophecy by Jack Kerouac, and he has Dean. Things are going pretty well until he accidentally signs Dean up as his Beloved Consort, a role that requires sex with the Antichrist on an altar. And that's when things stop going pretty well. Also, the soundtrack to the Apocalypse sucks. I'm actually in the middle of this podfic, and it's absolutely amazing. (Omg, how much do I love this podfic, let me count the ways...) It's equal parts hilarious and creepy as hell. Love it so much!
The Knuckles of Skinnybone Tree (http://hansbekhart.livejournal.com/265125.html). Sam/Dean. John Winchester walks the badlands, lost on the Path of the Dead, when he meets two mysterious men: a pair of hunters chasing the same ghost that he is, who tell him that he's wound up more than twenty years in the future. They promise to get him back to his own time -- back to his young children -- but refuse to tell him anything about themselves. The three men find themselves entangled with the warring spirits of the land, but John is pursued by nightmares and caught up between the two hunters, who are keeping secrets that John doesn't understand. (Podfic of this also available!) This...is hard to describe. It's dark and emotional and doesn't pull the punches when it could; it really pulls a reader in, and it's definitely a fic you want to read all in one sitting.

Date: 2010-07-02 04:17 am (UTC)If It Weren't For You Meddling Kids (http://apocalypsos.livejournal.com/1346252.html): J2, minor Jared/Sandy. Jared is one of the leads of the new TV show "Supernatural", but under cover of darkness he is Shadow, a costumed superhero in dark blue spandex who prowls the streets fighting crime and saving people. The move to Vancouver means dealing with an entirely new city to patrol, Mike and Tom's ridiculous excuse for a two-man superhero team, and the mysterious man in black on a motorcycle who's following "Shadow" on his patrols and keeping Jared up nights. In other words, Jared’s a tall friendly Texan who walks through walls, Jensen’s his reserved new co-star -- together, THEY FIGHT CRIME! \o/. Modern-day AU. Omg, I love love love this fic so much! It's on my list of fics to podfic as soon as (A) I get the courage to podfic RPS, and (B) as soon as I figure out how to do Nobody's "voice."
Into His Hand (http://drvsilla.livejournal.com/324445.html) and its sequel Seeing Daylight (http://drvsilla.livejournal.com/465736.html): J2. JR Ackles is a professional bullrider at the top of his game. He's got one thing on his mind: winning the championship belt buckle and the right to call himself the best in the world. His unwavering dedication and focus is finally put to the test in the form of JT Padalecki, an up-and-coming rider new to the professional ranks, who has his sights set on winning the PBR finals -- and Jensen. Cowboys ride and get by on grit and tough determination - the question facing Jensen is if they have to do it alone. Modern-day AU. Rereading "Into His Hand" has been on my to-do list because I haven't actually yet read "Seeing Daylight." However, I rec both here because "Into His Hand" was so damn good that I know "Seeing Daylight" will be just as awesome. Highly recommend these two.
The Language of Waves and Radiation (Or, How the Dead Speak to the Living) (http://web.archive.org/web/20071030035046/thistogether.org/wavesandradiation/index.html): J2. The story makes two assumptions. First, that the government is lying to you. Second, that every movement you make on the internet is subject to scrutiny. Modern-day AU. Really interesting story about the government and how everyday people can fight for freedom of information.
The Learning Curve at Wakefield High (http://aynslee.livejournal.com/41892.html): J2. When Jared accepts the job at Wakefield High, he expects the usual problems: lazy students, meddlesome parents, and an air conditioner that barely functions in the Texas heat. But he doesn’t expect his biggest problem, which comes in the form of his new boss — Principal Jensen Ackles. Pretty standard high-school teachers modern-day AU but eminently readable: cute, just enough angst to be interesting, great dialogue.
Monogatari (http://winterlive.livejournal.com/366089.html): J2. In short, in sum this story answers the question, what if Jensen and Jared were samurai. Modern-day alternate-history. This was my very first J2 fic, and I still love it.

Date: 2010-07-02 04:18 am (UTC)Of Dice and Jen(sen) (http://epeeblade.livejournal.com/488382.html): J2, Jared/Sandy, Sophia/Chad Michael Murray, Sandy/Chad Lindberg, Chris Kane/Alona Tal. In 1999, Jensen is a senior at college, his biggest concerns are getting into grad school and planning his next roleplaying game. Everything changes when freshman Jared Padalecki joins the gaming club. Ah, yes, the fic that made me want to learn how to LARP. Really cute fic, don't have to know what LARPing is, although it helps. (Live-Action Role-Play fyi.)
Queensguard (http://aramuin.livejournal.com/323074.html): J2. "The fifth season of Supernatural, CW's paranormal drama, is scheduled for a return to our screens in autumn. Show creator Eric Kripke is reported to be "thrilled" with the news that show stars, Jared Padelecki and Jensen Ackles, have confirmed they'll be returning as brothers Dean and Sam Winchester. CW sources confirm that shooting is due to start soon with the first episode due to air on September 20th, 2012." It's been nearly three years since the war against the alien race known as the Others changed the world and nearly four months since they were beaten back by Earth's natural superweapons, the dragons. Jared's looking forward to reconnecting with his best friend and picking up life where he left off. It doesn't seem much to ask but after three years, how much has really changed? And are the secrets Jensen's hiding better left alone? Excellent modern-day AU made into an excellent podfic...er, that I think you already recced? Oops. Well, if you haven't go read or listen! :)
Veterans of the Psychic Wars (http://community.livejournal.com/psychicwar/3181.html): J2. When the invasion came, no-one was ready. Humanity faltered. We died by the thousands, then by the millions. Nations fell before them before the survivors could begin to hold them back. The battles raged across the world, and communications became difficult, and then impossible. South America was gone. Before contact with Europe and Asia was lost, they were struggling, but surviving. In North America, the line held at last, a curve that stretched from Oregon to Louisiana. To the south, a battle-ravaged wasteland. To the north, the survivors and the refugees huddled beneath the shields of the Protected Zone, safe by the work of shield Psions who could form the only barrier that worked. Along the front, soldiers waged war at terrible cost against an enemy that was truly inhuman. The tides of war turned on the work of battlefront Psions and their Guardians, elite warriors who could change the course of a battle with their skill and power. At the most desperate moment in humanity's history, two men would face the battle. Jared Padalecki, a Psion whose power could only lead him to self-destruction alone in the face of the horrors of war, and Jensen Ackles, a Guardian fractured by his past. Apart, they are broken and incomplete. Together, they just might save the world, and maybe even themselves. This is another one that I cannot rec enough. Title comes from a Blue Oyster Cult song of the same title (awesome song). There aren't really words for how fantastic this story is. Go, read, and hope that one day it gets podficced.

Date: 2010-07-02 04:20 am (UTC)A Clear and Different Light (http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=fic&id=53): Sheppard/McKay. Rodney McKay, raised by a pod of telepathic whales. John Sheppard, mage with fae blood. Teyla Emmagan, rune-scientist. Ronon Dex, winged soldier. On the waystation of Atlantis, they're about to become embroiled in an age-old war against a brutal enemy. The AU with the whales! Man, SGA does AUs so well. Also, check out the LJ comm (http://community.livejournal.com/whaleverse/) with extras!
A Face That Nobody Knows (http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=fic&id=52): Sheppard/McKay. The best night of Rodney McKay's life was when the Night-Owl started serving five-cent coffee after the government ended two years of ration restrictions. As it turned out, it would also be the night he encountered John Sheppard, and even much later there were times when he was still not wholly convinced that it turned out to be a good thing. Film noir AU! Much love for all things film noir.
Aegis (http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=fic&id=16) and its sequel Enthrall (http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=fic&id=46): Sheppard/McKay. The Ancients' genes didn't just confer the power to activate their technology. For ten percent of Earth's population, like John Sheppard, the ATA gene also gave them Gifts: special abilities that made them admired, envied, and feared. Sheppard was a Charmer, one of the feared ones, whose particular Gift let him create faith whenever he needed to be trusted or believed. But Sheppard didn't trust himself not to destroy what he loved most. And somewhere along the line, amid the terror and chaos of the Expedition's first year in the Pegasus Galaxy, what Sheppard loved most had become Rodney McKay. McKay didn't trust anyone. As soon as you started trusting people, you started counting on them, depending on them, and that was when you became vulnerable. And vulnerable things didn't survive. So just when, exactly, had he started trusting Sheppard? And what was going to happen, now that he did? In which they have powers, Sheppard is still an outsider, and McKay really, really wants the gene more than ever. So good, both stories. Oh, man, I keep hoping they're going to write a third one. ("Aegis" has already been podficced, and it's awesome.)
Children of Lantean Design (http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=fic&id=50): Sheppard/McKay, Dex/Keller, Lorne/Parrish. An explosion in the abandoned sections sends Atlantis personnel scrambling to find out why. In another universe, Atlantis has fallen. All that's left of the expedition are a group of young refugees fighting for survival in the unexplored regions of the city, transported to a parallel universe by and Ancient device. What started out as a humanitarian effort to heal the kids becomes something more as they begin to find their way in this new universe, like their own but different in fundamental ways. They change the very fabric of Atlantis, and a few meddling kids might be what certain people need to realize what's right in front of their faces. Kid!fic done right! Really interesting OCs and really intriguing plot.

Date: 2010-07-02 04:20 am (UTC)Theory of Evolution (http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=fic&id=2): Sheppard/McKay. Stuck with a body he can't accept as his own, John withdraws -- and Rodney lets him, certain that all John needs is time. But what if he's wrong? What if Sheppard's body never reverted back to human post-"Conversion"? The podfic is also very awesome. Wow, I've read or listened to this story more times than I can remember. Highly recommended. Sometimes a bit too angsty but still utterly fantastic.
View From an Occupation (http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=fic&id=4): Sheppard/McKay. The Genii take over the Atlantis in The Storm/The Eye and John and Rodney form a half-hazard, insane plan to take the city back that may end up destroying the both of them in the process. Another one I've read several times. Again, very awesome.
Zen and the Art of Jumper Maintenance (http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=fic&id=45): Sheppard/McKay. The one where Rodney gets sucked in and John…follows. Featuring a quirky John, Rodney in orange robes, crazy Ancient-worship, sheep milking and jumpers that aren't broken but need to be fixed anyway. Rodney is with John in the Sanctuary, and this story is really how the episode should have gone. Can I actually come up with another adjective than "awesome"? Not tonight.
Wow, consider this a thank you for all the wonderful recs you've given me. (Also, I'm realizing how many of these I might have to podfic. What a shame, right? :p) As I go through the long list of Big Bangs I kept meaning to read, oh, last year, I'll send recs your way. I'm still going through a few more Kirk/Spock stories right now though, but I've got some SPN and SGA Big Bangs to read as well.
(Oh, gods, such long comments! Sorry!)
