You know, back then, when I was still watching Smallville on a regular basis, my favorite character was Clark Kent. Seriously. Lex was awesome, but I loved Clark best. And I never understood why people bashed him so. I mean...

Being best friends with Clark didn't give Lex the right to poke around in Clark's life. And being best friends with Lex, didn't mean that Clark had any obligation to tell him the truth about who and what he was. I mean, fans were up in arms about how Clark should have told Lex the truth since they were friends - but let's turn it around: If they were friends, Lex should have respected that Clark had good reasons not to tell him everything. Because friendship and trust is a two-way street. Fans said that Clark was selfish, abusing Lex's money and power when he needed it - but how many times did he save Lex when someone threatened Lex's life, knowing that he risked exposing his secret every time? And besides, it wasn't just his secret, it could've ruined the lives of his parents too. And with Lionel breathing down Lex's neck, Lex wondered why Clark wasn't honest with him?

I'm not bashing Lex, I just understand both sides of the argument. I did wish that Clark told Lex the truth, because honestly, I do think that it would have given Lex the strength to fight Lionel and people's prejudice - on the other hand, Lex's obsession with Clark was really... creepy, and seriously, can you imagine being in Clark's place with someone digging through your life like that? It would scare the living daylights out of me!

Though yeah, I love both of them and I think that they really were/are destined to be the only constant in each other's life, keeping each other in line. Besides, on a very shallow note, they are so hot together! \o/

I love your post.
I know back in S3, many fans were mad at Clark not telling his secret to Lex but many things and people would be at risk.
Somehow, i felt that Lex deserved to know the truth eventually but things turned out otherwise for both.

I always see the SV relationship of Clark and Lex as the epitome of a tragedy, where their circumstances will never, ever allow for anything but an unhappy ending. No matter how much they may want to be together, be it as friends or lovers, they can never be because, yes, Clark lied and Lex pushed too hard. But how could a teenager who just found out that he's an alien deal with an older boy who lets his curiosity and need-to-know overwhelm trust? Yes, I agree, destiny ties them together, and I think they could reconcile after awhile (a long while!), but it's never going to be easy. (Hence why I love future fics.) Aaaaaaand would only really happen in fanfiction, unfortunately.

I agree with this post wholeheartedly!

Thank you! Yeah, for me it wasn't an either/or scenario. I liked both of them I really didn't get the bashing :(

I could see them becoming friends one day in the future, when they are equals. In Smallville, they were never equal as far as power goes. Lex always had the power to destroy Clark which made Clark afraid and put him on the defensive - his parents paranoia didn't help, of course.

You know, with so many standalone AUs in DC's universe, I wouldn't be surprised if some writer came up with an AU where Clark and Lex worked together. I mean, DC themselves have proven that there ARE alternate realities where anything can happen...

Omg, DC proved that they were a-okay with potentially slashy fan-service when they had a canon AU wherein Steve Rogers (Captain America) marries Tony Stark (Iron Man) Natasha Stark (Iron Woman). <3 But I'd love to see DC do something with Clark and Lex working together, hopefully with their background as that from Smallville.

I think it's true that they could become friends only when they're more equals. Partially, I actually rather like that it's like mutual blackmail, where they have so much dirt on each other that they can't even be enemies anymore.
