I haven't posted anything SGA related in a while now - what with the show canceled and Fandemonium's inability to cough out even one book per year - but this... This raised my hackles.
I was reading #stargate related tweets on Twitter and I came across someone saying, how unfortunate it was that SGU decided to take the military vs. civilians route - but then, that was what Stargate had always been about.
WTF! No, really - WTF?!
That's definitely not what Stargate's been about. SG-1 to some extent, yes. But SGA? Not since early S1. Then never again. Especially not with the Atlantis crew - some outsiders tried to impose their rules, but the "Atlanteans" always went their own way. Sheppard and McKay always worked together and they always made sure that both sides respected each other. When McKay pointed out something, Sheppard never dismissed him for being a civilian! For being a hypochondriac worrywart sure, but never for being a civilian!
So, seriously - WTF! Wow, I haven't been this pissed off in ages now!

Date: 2010-04-10 09:26 am (UTC)I must have been watching entirely different shows to have missed this important, ongoing plot point.
The new BSG, sure, it was a whole storyline with several mutinies but Stargate? Buzzuh.

Date: 2010-04-10 10:56 am (UTC)Right, I mean, sure you had the occasional new military commander come in, like the Col. in the Season 1 Finale or the commanders of the ships and they butted heads with Weir and/or McKay.
But they also butted heads with Sheppard. It was simply a case of showing the group aka the core main cast dealing with (semi)antagonists. It was the same whenever an IOA member aka civilian came and ruffled things up.
That's not so much military vs. civilians as it is the typical of all shows "us against them". *shakes head*
The problem on SGU is more that while they have set up a clearer divide of military vs. civilians, it's that they made EVERY side unsympathetic. The political person is a cowardly schemer, the head scientist a narcisstic near-sociapath and the head military guy is a bi-polar attempted murderer. I would gladly root for whatever camp if it had likeable and smart characters on it.

Which you've probably already seen but it means White Collar season 2 is coming!
