Of RPS

Wow, I still can't believe that Supernatural won the People's Choice Award for best SF/F show. Wow! Congratulations! I hope that we will get to see Kripke talking about it, on the S5 DVD box set if nothing else.

And both Jared and Jensen are engaged to be married very, very soon if the rumors are true. Congratulations. But that's rather it for me. I'm not really interested in the personal lives of the actors. Sure, it's cute to hear about their dogs or how Jared sucks at golfing - but I could care less about their love life *shrugs*

I'm not and I've never been a fan of either Danneel Harris or Genevieve Cortese (or Sandy McCoy before that). I've seen them in various shows and they never made an impression on me. I'm not bashing them, I'm just not their fan, I don't go out of my way to find their movies/series. They aren't more beautiful or more talented than dozens of other actresses. And just because I'm a fan of Jared and Jensen, there's no fan law that orders me to automatically become a fan of their soon-to-be-wives - remember the mess when Jared and Sandy broke up? No, thank you. And it makes me rather annoyed that a big part of the fandom accuses me of being a bad fan or, I don't know, a wanker if I don't immediately become a fan of Danneel and Genevieve by proxy. I think it's actually rather insulting for the actresses if you become their fan just because they are someone's fiancées.

Which brings me to the point of my entry - RPS fics and J2 in this case. Yes, I still read CWRPS stories regardless of the marital status of the actors. Why? Because 95% of stories that I read are AUs with original characters that are modeled after Jared and Jensen and that's it. If they were named Dick and Larry instead of Jared and Jensen, nothing would change. There are stories with businessman!Jensen and veterinarian!Jared, singer!Jensen and ranch-owner!Jared, physical-therapist!Jensen and assassin!Jared etc. etc. I read these fics as I would watch a movie where the characters are portrayed by Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. And those have nothing to do with the personal lives of the actors.

Enough meta-ing for 9am!

Well said!

I've started watching Flash Forward and imagine my horror when I saw GC's name in the credits.

I agree with you. Just because you like one half of a married couple doesn't mean you automatically have to be fans of the other half. (I like Misha Collins, but I don't know a thing about his wife, and I'm fine with that.)

There's a big difference between not being a fan and actually bashing them.

I totaly agree with you. 100 % (although my husband is quite the fan of Sandy and it has nothing to do with Jared - it only has to do with her. KNowing him mostly her but).

What does not wanting to get into an acters personal life have to do with what quality of fan you are?

Most of the RP fics I read are AU as well - the others seem weirdly intrusive.

But then again I think the supernatural fandom i a little self distructive as a whole. It seems to mostly be about telling people who don't agree with you they are bad in some way.

All I care about the actors is what I care about for anyone else. That they're happy. And, well, hopefully in this case on a kickass show they love!
I agree with you though, it's cute to hear stuff about their animals, or I like to hear about the charities they support.

Man, I so agree. I don't really care for the actor's personal lifes. Now if I'm a fan of an actor, I prefer to hear or see for myself that they are nice people (or at least can fake it well for the public, IMO people have a right to be jerks once in a while, everybody is) and for co-stars to get along - I was saddened about Castle - but their engagement, marriages, divorces etc? None of my buisness, none of my concern.

The only time I did fret last year was when I feared they'd prolong the character/actress on the show as a favour to the real-life relationship. THAT, I would have had a problem with. Now, though, I wish them luck and that's it.

Hell, there's no law, fannish or otherwise, that says you have to either like or dislike the significant other of someone you enjoy watching onscreen. I'm just glad you don't have a knee-jerk reaction and hate the girls simply because they're hooked up, because so many people do. And that just sucks and smacks of being a rabid fan. I like Danneel, but if I never saw her again I wouldn't cry in my Wheaties. Gen I just vaguely don't care for, kinda meh! I'm just in it for the boys and since I read and write is total fantasy, them being married or not makes absolutely no difference what-so-ever.

I agree with everyone else, why should you automatically like an actor's other half, just because you like the actor?

I would much rather come to like said other half through their own work or that they remain anonymous to me.

I really like your way of comparing RPS AUs to actors portraying characters in the movies - this is what I've been trying to explain for a while, only not so well.

With RPS, I take some fanon-established traits of 'Jared' and 'Jensen' characters I read about, that happen to be based on real people whose personalities we see on the interviews, etc; but I don't think those have much to do with, well, reality (it's true about non-J2 RPFiction I read, too). In fact, the less I know about the actors' personal life, the easier it is for me to read RPS.

I like Genevieve, quite a bit, and I am pleased she's in Flash Forward. It has nothing to do with her relationships. I understand she's not everyone's favourite actress, I don't expect everyone to have the same taste in actors and actresses as I do. I had seen very little of Danneel in shows or movies I watch, so I have no opinion as of yet.

I don't know, all this noise seems kind of pointless to me, I'd prefer people doing much more productive things with their time than arguing about the actors' relationships. Like, write more fic. This would please me ;D

(tl;dr: I liked your post. I'll go and read RPS fic now. And then catch up on Flash Forward.)

Thiiiis! So much this. I don't really read J2, but that's how I've come to see RPS nowadays.
