Sharing Is Caring, Day 5

For one week, recommend/share:
Day one: a song
Day two: a picture
Day three: a book/ebook/fanfic
Day four: a site

Day five: a youtube clip
Day six: a quote
Day seven: whatever tickles your fancy

I would like to rec this SGA clip: Link. This was the first moment where I felt that John and Rodney will end up being ~awesome~ friends - and GEEK OUT together! Ha! Bouncy doesn't even begin to cover them!

I love their smiles, all happy and perky! They totally geeked out there! Too bad the show lost that in S5 :(

I was so sad when I realized that they'd lost that in S5. But part of the reason they lost it was that the writers started concentrating on getting Rodney to randomly (in my mind at least) hook up with Jennifer, a storyline I disliked. Which is sad because I like Jewel Stait and I wanted to like her character, and then it all went downhill. They could've done so much more with her character!

But because of that, there was less cute geekiness between Rodney and John. And considering that their relationship (platonic friends or more, take your choice) is one of the (possibly THE) fundamental relationships on the show, the storylines themselves went downhill with the change of interplay of the characters. Very saddening.

Exactly my sentiment. What I loved about the friendship between John and Rodney was that they were actual friends, as in hanging out together, doing geeky stuff together, drinking beer together - despite being a soldier and a scientist. For example, I loved The Game where we found out that they had been playing this game secretly for two whole years! That's why I was so miffed when the writers tried to tell us that ~Carson~ was Rodney's best friend - despite ~showing~ us that Rodney hung out with John. Or that Rodney was oh so in love with Jennifer, but ~showing~ us that Rodney, reduced to a small child, remembered only John (The Shrine), worried only about John despite Jennifer being in danger, too (The Prodigal). The whole "showing" vs. "telling" irked me totally. It felt like the writers were bipolar or something.

I loved that revelation in The Game! Just all those little things you see in the entire series, like when they're racing toy cars in an abandoned hallway (I forget which ep that is, early season 5?). They genuinely like each other and like to hang out and geek out with each other.

The Shrine will always break my heart. But the fact that Rodney loses everything, everything except John's name, seems really telling. They really are best friends, and you're right -- sometimes, the writers seem to forget that. I guess that's what happens when there's a bunch of writers with different agendas? And they really did change things to give the maximum emotion, such as the idea of Carson being Rodney's best friend came up on the Sunday ep, just when he died to give Rodney even more guilt. Not cool.
