*sigh*

I don't usually join all the sexist/ablist/misogynist/racist bruhaha out there - most of it is blown totally out of proportion - but the latest SGU spoiler? Like, for real?

So, we have a quadriplegic Eleanor who switches bodies with the only lesbian character on the show and proceeds to have sex with the man with whom the lesbian refused to go to bed. Erm, for real?

Setting aside the lesbian thing, the point of consent doesn't border on dub here, it's a hardcore non-con of the date-rape kind. How are Rush's actions - and Eleanor's too - different from a date-rapist's? And if that's the point of the episode - which I highly doubt - will the wrongness of his act be properly acknowledged? Even on SPN Sam didn't succumb to Ruby's seduction until she proved to him that the owner of the body she was using had officially died.

I mean, these are the same writers who thought it funny that Lucius drugged his wives into submission (SGA) and never acknowledged the fact that Daniel was raped by Hathor (SG-1). And now this.

And even if the crime is addressed, does it change the fact that the lead of the show committed rape? Or does that fall under the "they are both heroes and villains" and I should just accept that people do bad things and move on? And they want me to watch people like that week in, week out? Like, for real?

This enrages me because it feeds into the rape myths. We popularize these myths in fiction, and make them out to be heroic and manly actions.

Take your typical romance novel. Girl says no. Guy knows that she means yes, but she just doesn't know it, so he forcefully pursues her. All this, of course, arouses her, but she continues to refuse. But he won't back off. he holds her down for kisses and stimulation, talking to her about how he knows she's hot for him. And even, as she says no, she is incredibly aroused and doesn't understand what she is feeling, but he tells her it is okay. It's natural for her to feel this way and he's going to make it even better. Eventually she gives in, because it's too much trouble to fight both him and her sexual urges. So, they have sex, and she enjoys it immensely, and realizes that the man was right all along and now she realizes that she loves him.

This is clearly date rape and sexual harassment, but the man comes off as the good guy who knows what is best for the little woman, women are slaves to their sexual desire who need a man that can handle them, and ultimately, no really does mean yes.

Remember Andy in SPN, using his powers to make women sleep with him, but it was okay because they liked it, and Dean thought he was pretty awesome, going from scrud to stud because of how he mastered women.

No wonder we have so much trouble proving cases of sexual harassment and date rape, when we are bombarded with indoctrination that the rape myths are true.

And, judging from the response, there will be no acknowledgment of the crime. They're going to try to write their way out of responsibility, but the fact will remain that people have been violated.

I agree with you about SGU. And what's even worse, when you bring it up, the whole consent thing and rape, rabid fans of SGU tell you that you're jumping the gun, that maybe the character gave consent - for real? They want to tell me that Camille agreed for Eleanor to use her body to get her rocks off? O.o

But about Andy - I understood it that way that he did not use his powers on the girls, that was the whole point. People just genuinely liked him - unlike his brother. When Dean told him that he could have anything, he said that he didn't need anything, that he had everything he needed. Well, that's how I understood it.
