Trying out everyone's favorites

I thought that it was time to take a look at Firefly. A very bad decision with the fall season knocking at the door *head/desk* The show is really good. And I mean, really really good. I'm not one of those people who immediately find anything that Joss Whedon does Nobel Prize worthy, but this one is really good.

So far, I love Simon, Wash but especially Kaylee best. Jewel Staite is really awesome in this one. I have nothing against her playing Dr. Jennifer Keller on SGA but there, she's just a blond love interest, not a real addition, an enrichment to the show. On Firefly, she plays a character with a very distinct personality and that's kind of fascinating!

Yeah, like I really needed another addiction. Shucks!

Another one of people's favorites is Harry Potter. Yes, I decided to read it. Not that I'm all that gung-ho about the book or the characters but it's a part of our pop-culture and it's good to at least know what people are talking about - I read Gaiman's "American Gods" for the very same reason. I decided to try at least the first book of HP. So far, it's not bad - if you suspend your disbelief. No, not in the "look, magic does exist way" but in the "look, Harry Potter is the modern Cinderella" way. But then, it's a book for kids after all...

And the promo for the new ep of Atlantis!

About Firefly - so very true. I saw some of Buffy and Angel, but wasn't blown away, whereas Firefly was AWESOME. And sparkly. And omigosh, so shiny! I think there wasn't a single episode I didn't like. <3

I'm pretty indifferent towards Harry Potter these days. I read all of it, and yeah, the universe is shiny and full of interesting people to play with, except I lost interest as I read more.

I liked Buffy but I wasn't really smitten and Angel didn't really catch my interest. But Firefly looks really good so far :)

I decided to read at least the first book of HP because I had no idea what people were talking about so I wanted to at least get to know the characters.

I'm so glad you're enjoying Firefly! I loved the show - it actually hurts that it only got half a season's worth of episode, because it had such promise... But at least that's good when you've got plenty of other shows on your plate? *g*

Yeah, it's too bad that it had only 12 eps - that's what I'm telling myself whenever I get angry again about SGA's cancellation: at least we had five awesome years! :(

I love the first three HP books. It sort of went downhill after that for me. But yeah, the first three are pretty awesome IMO.

I will read the first one and see if it's worth continuing. Mostly, I picked it up to at least know what people are talking about :D

Aww, I love Firefly. And not because it is a Joss show, because man, Joss Whedon annoys me. And his almost religiously devoted fans annoy me even more. But Firefly is just lovely - so much fun, and I love every character. Except Shepherd Book, who irritates me more each time I watch the show. But everyone else. The show had so much potential. Stupid Fox.

Have you seen Serenity yet? Or not finished the half-season of FF?

[identity profile] katikat.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I kind of dislike Shepherd Book too. I mean, it's one thing to use violence unprovoked, to defend yourself is a completely different thing.

And nope, so far, I've seen only the pilot. I was copying stuff for a friend and though, what the heck, and decided to watch it :) Wah, so many great shows, so little time XP

I find Book rather smug and sanctimonious, on the whole. He has a very holier-than-thou attitude that bugs me - it's the actor, because it is clear that the character isn't meant to come across that way. But the rest of the cast are great.

There are only 14 episodes in total - go watch the rest!

[identity profile] katikat.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
14? I thought that only 12 + the theatrical movie...

[identity profile] llywela13.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
14 were made; only 11 ever aired. But they are all on the DVD :-) Plus the movie.

Awesome! A good reason to buy the DVDs then. And they aren't all that expensive, considering. 25 USD only.
