X-Men: Days of Future Past
Title: X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
Cast: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen
Rating: 8/10 or 4/5
I liked it a lot and I need to see it again to digest all its nuances, just like with CA:TW. Because it's an epic scale character piece, first and foremost.
Though I didn't like it as much as XMFC. Why? Maybe exactly because of its epicness. I loved XMFC's intimacy. Or maybe because of the future storyline. This movie made me realize that I cared little about the original cast. I love the 70s cast, the intimate Charles/Erik/Raven triangle, where the actual conflict is about Charles, Erik and Raven, not about Professor X, Magneto and Mystique. I love their intricate, close relationship and the build-up. The future storyline is... too broad. It has WAY too many characters and that doesn't allow for intimacy. And the whole Logan/Jean/Scott triangle isn't nearly as interesting or deep as Charles/Erik/Raven. Because, let's face it, Logan/Jean/Scott is a love triangle and that's where it all begins and ends, the guys want to fuck the girl and the girl cannot decide with whom to go to the prom, basically. Charles/Erik/Raven goes much deeper because it's about family, not about fucking - outside fanfiction, that is. And I would rather watch the family drama that is Charles/Erik/Raven than Logan and Scott's macho posturing over Jean. And that's why I liked XMFC more than XMDOFP.
In XMDOFP, the small scenes work better, when it's people just talking. Oh, don't get me wrong, the action is breathtaking. But I was more interested in Charles and Erik's big (verbal) fight on the plane, in Hank's explanation of what was going on with Charles, in all the little bits between Logan and Charles, in Mystique's clashes with Erik... Those scenes worked perfectly!
And the after-credit scene set up X-Men: Apocalypse so well! Reminded me of Stargate, to be honest :)
