Reichenbach 1.0 & 2.0

You know what's wonderful? That we got 2 versions of the Reichenbach incident just a few weeks apart. And both were wonderful in their own way...

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as Holmes and Watson respectively. The whole movie long, everything Holmes did had one goal: to protect Watson. And the Reichenbach fall was the climax, the destruction of a hated enemy even at the cost of Holmes' life because it was the only way to protect Watson. The last look between them, the way Holmes then closed his eyes so that Watson would be the last thing he ever saw... And the movie ended on a hopeful note.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Sherlock and John respectively. With his reputation destroyed, Sherlock could've done only one thing - protect his friends, even at the cost of having Watson witness his suicide. Leaving his friend, knowing that what he was about to do would hurt John yet needing to protect him, Sherlock jumped. And even though he survived, the episode had a very sad ending, with both men alone and John grieving for his dead friend.

So, which Reichenbach did you like best? For me, both were so good and so heartbreaking - and both were suicides, coincidentally! - but I liked Sherlock's better. In RDJ's movie, the incident, Holmes' grief felt a bit one-sided. Oh, don't get me wrong, Watson grieved deeply, but he had a wife and he was getting over even though Holmes' death left an ache behind. In the series, Sherlock is John's cornerstone. As he said, before he met Sherlock, he was so alone - and now? His best friend's gone. His "job" and his flat are gone with him because he can't afford 221B on his own, it was the whole point of sharing. What's left? And that's why, Sherlock's death in the series had a much deeper impact on me.

What about you?
