Smilla's Sense of Snow

Smilla's Sense of Snow, the 90s movie starring Julia Ormond and Gabriel Byrne, is a weird-ass thriller. The setting was quite unsettling - I don't mean Copenhagen per se, but the way it was filmed, all grey and dark and full of snow... the atmosphere was really creepy. And then the ship and the iceland... *shudders* I'm not a big fan of wide open and entirely white spaces.

The film itself was quite good and Smilla was really kick-ass - like when she grabbed her step-mother by the crotch, LOL! - until the last part, inside the iceberg... What happened? Suddenly, Smilla could only stand there and let herself get caught again and again like a damsel in distress! It felt like I was watching a completely different movie. Also, her relationship with what's-his-name? Too complicated. Way too many twists and turns. I know that they wanted to keep the audience guessing but for me? That was too much.

A good movie, worth seeing, sure but very inconsistent in its portrayal of characters.
